RE: Fox Sterlingworth
I don' t have a book on the subject, so you' ll have to forgive me if I work from memory.
Once upon a time, in the early twentieth century, the was a group of extremely fine American shotgun makers--A.H. Fox, Parker, Lefever, L.C. Smith, and Ithaca. These makers made double and single barrel shotguns of quality fit and finish which were largely hand made " by little old men with files" .
The Fox Sterlingworth was the " plain Jane" model of the old A.H. Fox line, but was still beautifully crafted.
Savage Co. bought out Fox (I believe in the late 30' s), and for a while continued some of the models. Then, after WW II they transferred the name Fox to what amounted to a slightly gussied up version of its Stevens 311. These later Foxes were reliable guns, but no where near the quality of the old .
I do not know how many of these transition models of the Sterlingworth were made, or if they have the value of the original Fox, but any of these guns by the original makers bring premium prices today.
