Default RE: Which type of air gun pellet is best?

A lot depends on what you' ll be shooting at . Targets don' t require a lot of punch , so .177 would be fine . If you' re hunting , and sure it' s leagl to hunt with an airgun where you are , go with .22 pellets for better knockdown . What are you shooting at ?

177' s are the cheapest to plink with and offer the highest velocity. 22' s are better for hunting anything larger than sparrows, even though I' ve killed squirrels and even a couple groundhogs with one of my magnum 177' s. I have since switched to a magnum 22 for " bigger" game. Some feel the .20 is a good comprimise between the two. In my opinion the 25 is too heavy for all but couple of the supermagnum rifles.

But as Kevin said, tell us what you want the rifle for and you' ll get better answers.

I use a .177 and if there' s a reason for a bigger slug, I use a .22 rimfire. Many air guns are capable of well over 1,000 feet per second and I' ve yet to find a need for a larger pellet.....the .177 does it all for me.

" Many air guns are capable of well over 1,000 feet per second " Many airgun companies post those velocities, but very few models actually shoot 1,000 with standard weight pellets when shot through a chronograph.
