Default Kar 98k useful for small game hunting?

Recently turned 18 and my friend and I are going to start hunting small game. I've never fired a gun before outside of a 20 gauge shotgun with my dad, and I'm looking to buy my first rifle. The Big 5 near my house is always selling Kar 98k's and as a historical enthusiast and would be hunter, I was wondering if this gun is sufficient for hunting small game, and white-tailed deer down the road. Thanks

My family has been using Mauser 98's for deer hunting ever since my uncle brought 5 of them back from WWII. They're accurate, well made, and will drop anything a 30-06 will. However unless you can handload cast bullets with small powder charges, you'll blow the snot out of any small small game you'd be unfortunate enough to hit.

Rabbits, Squirrels and other possible small game, budget for the rifle itself under 700$ between 30-150 yards

use that 20 gauge you use to shoot for small game....or a 22lr...

assuming by "small game" we mean squirrels, rabbits, upland birds etc....if birds and/or rabbits are on the menu, shotgun is pretty much needed...squirrels can be a blast to hunt with a 22...rabbits and upland birds can be shot with a 22 as well, but they are typically running and flying when you are going to get a shot, and a 22 is not the right tool for that...a shotgun is.

for deer, and anything else deer sized, those k98s will be fine..i had trouble with my sights on my sporterized 98...shot WAY high with the iron sights...i took it to a gunsmith and had a scope put on for a little extra money and shes killed me a bunch of deer...

good luck!
