The problem is that the gun was my first rifle which I have been handing it through my kids....too many memories to get rid of it and too important to stop making memories with it.

Thats BS, find another smith! The 788's are known for accuracy with top level loads, when you get above max loads the actions due to the rear lugs will suffer from bolt lug compression, so don't hotrod it if ya decide to reload. I've had 5 788's they all shot very well.
