Default RE: Barnes bullets for my 7 mag on moose?

Thats right. Barnes has out a manuel these days. Hodgedon also posts some data on the Barnes bullets. Since they are totally copper, they build up alot of pressure quicker than traditional skinned bullets. So do Failsafes, and trophy bonded. Yep, they have alot of wieght retention. Problem is they can be finicky to get to shoot well. They seem to like to be loaded deeper than most bullets. Some guns love em. I don' t like them, because they copper foul horribly. So do TBBC. But 175gr should be great moose medicine. On my moose hunt I used Swift A-Frames.

I have killed several moose and elk with 140gr partitions. The barnes x do not shoot well in my rifles but a friend uses 140gr x bullets for moose and elk and they perform well.I have never fired a 175gr bullet from any 7mm and if a premium bullet is used even 160' s are heavier than necessary.

Otis-I have recovered only one 140gr partition from an elk and that one travelled lengthwise through a few feet of elk.I have never recovered one from a moose as all exited. Most of these elk and moose were taken with the 7mmstw with a muzzle velocity of 3500fps and not one bullet came apart or failed to penetrate. My shots have varied from 80 yards or so out to over 300 yards and in some cases impact velocity was higher than the muzzle velocity of a 7mmremmag.If a shoulder is struck even 140 grain partitions will hold together fine and drive on through.People can talk all the theories about sectional densty and anything else they choose to but I am more likely to believe the results that I have seen with my own eyes than any theories others might have. After all how can you claim to know how a 140gr partition out of a 7mm will perform if you have never tried it?

Call me crazy but I find Moose drop very easily. I have taken my fair share of good sized canadian moose and 3 have fallen to a 270 140 gr failsafe, all one shot kills with minimal travel. Last fall I dropped a decent bull with a 150 Gr SST out of my 7 rem mag. with one clean shot through his vitals (I was not really hunting moose at the time, but a buddy had a draw tag and the opportunity presented itself in a low population zone, so I thought what the heck). I know all about their hides, bone structure, etc as I usually hunt them with the bow but I also know most guys shoot moose at under 200 yards with a rifle in Canada and given that most bullets if placed half way decent will produce a dead bull moose. I am hoping to get drawn this year on a Rifle Moose hunt at which I plan to use 140-160 grain depending what shoots the best out of my 7 rem Mag.

I think the 160 part will do the trick, if it flies well for you. Right now I am leaning toward a 140 Gr part as it has yeilded my best groups @ 200 yards in which I have tested.(I will be hunting whitetails in the smack of rut(if the good lord doesn' t allow me to tag out in bow or ML) at the same time, hence why I want more than just a bullet that will shoot Ok to 100-150 yards - I fully expect to have my bull on the ground by mid week and devote the rest of the time to hunting jumper) I am hoping to get my hands on the Hornady 150 Gr. Interbond, 150 Barnes X and give them a go before I make my final decision.

Otis:

My cousin shoots a .338 Win. Mag. in a Browning A-Bolt. The rounds I made for him are 225 gr. Barnes XFB @ 2900 f/s .75" three shot group at 100 yds.

I shoot a .340 Wby. Mag. using a 250 gr. Barnes XFB @ 3060 f/s .408" three shot group at 100 yds.

Both loads are constant as long as we do our part. The main thing I have found out about Barnes X bullets is you have to start out with a very very clean barrel. Good luck.
