I think I may finally start hunting during gun season next year in Ohio. I've been bowhunting here for nearly 25 years...and have been rifle hunting in WV for as long...but now I have some great areas for shotgun season, and need some gun help.
I own a Model 12, (worthless w/ slugs) a Rem 1100 12ga, rem chokes, but no slug barrel. I do have a B-square scope mount for it.
I also have a Handi Rifle in .223.
Here's my question. Do I send the handi-rifle back and get it fitted for a rifled barrel and then put a scope on it? ($120) OR...do I buy a rifled choke for the 1100?($30) OR do I buy a rifled barrel for the 1100? ($275)
I have shot 100 different guns...but I've never fired a slug in my life. But I do know that the 1100 trigger is so stiff that it nearly takes 2 fingers to pull it...LOL The Handi-rifle had a trigger job and has a crisp light trigger.
Any help is greatly appreciated...OH and also, would you recommend a 12 or 20 ga if I go with the re-barreling of the NEF?
Thanks!

Well, first of all, I would say no to the most expensive option- fully rifled barrel for the 1100. If the trigger is that bad, then you would need to rework it as well- extra work and extra $$$ - if you want to get decent accuracy out of it.
Getting a rifled choke tube is kind of a half-way solution. It might be the best option if you are going to keep your shots short. With the rifled choke tube, you should get at least "minute-of-deer" accuracy out to 60 or 70 yards. And if you don't, well you only spent $30 on it. If you do a lot of drives in your hunting - short range shots, running deer, etc. - you are going to want to have 2 or 3 fast shots available, not a single shot.
But if you are hunting from a stand, want better accuracy and have the possibility of shooting out to 100 yards or beyond, I'd go with rifled barrel/scope for the handi-rifle. My friend has a NEF slug gun that is an absolute tack driver out to 120 yards. He's never missed a deer with it as far as I know. If you go with this option, I would recommend getting the 20 gauge over the 12. You get equal trajectory, almost as much power, and WAY less recoil. My friend uses the 20 gauge with sabot slugs, and has never had a deer run further than 50 yards. Most of them are boom-flops.
Just my 2 cents...

After much thought...I think I will just get a rifled barrel for the NEF. By the time I rework the trigger on the 1100 and buy a $300 barrel, I could have bought an entirely new slug gun.

Get the NEF barrel.
The 20ga will fit your .223 frame, that is the barrel of choice for the NEF slug guns.
NEF will do a free trigger job when you send it in for the new barrel, just have to ask them. The thumbhole stock for 90.00 is great to.
I would say go with the rifled barrel for the 1100 ($275) but for that price you can get yourself a new H&R Ultra Deleuxe in either 12ga. or 20ga., they are single shots, but they are deadly I perfer the 20ga., either way you should put a scope on the 1100 or the H&R
