Maybe you can find the answer here:

If you cant legally purchase a shotgun in Jersey, how is owning it otherwise ok? Sounds like you're on your way to making some mistakes when you're older too.

You yankees have some stupid laws. If you can't buy it in your state, you shouldn't be allowed to buy it in mine. No wonder VA gets a bad rap for firearms. Thanks.

Besides, if you cant buy the weapon, you can't get the ammo either.

VA Law states:
"A person may not sell or otherwise furnish firearms to any person he knows is prohibited from possessing or transporting a firearm pursuant to § 18.2-308.1:1, 18.2-308.2, subsection B of § 18.2-308.2:01, or § 18.2-308.7.[243]"

You'd better be darn sure of that, unless you want to do some hard time. I can't imagine that if your state would restrict you from purchasing a firearm that the same law wouldn't also prohibit you from possessing one as well. If you got into legal trouble as a teen, and got tried as an adult and it was a felony beef, then being simply in possession of a firearm is probably a felony for you.

Before you try anything that's gonna land you in a cell, I'd call the NJ State Police, the State Attorney's office or at the least a good criminal defense attorney for legal advice. Or you can just take your chances like a fool and see what happens the first time a Game Warden/Conservation Officer stops to check your tags, runs your name through the system, and it spits out that you're not allowed to have a gun in NJ. Not good for you.

Dude, seriously...
I would go straight to the police department, dress like a gentleman and act like a gentleman. Talk to them, don't trust a bunch of posts on a forum. Come to Virginia and buy a firearm? Guess what happens if you get pulled over in NJ on the way home.... I'm telling you, YOUR laws won't even allow you to buy ammo. I wouldn't push my luck, pal.

The fact that you are already trying to circumvent the legal system tells a ton about your integrity. Do you think the governor or whoever would change their mind if they new you wanted to bend the law? I'd say forget about the shotgun or any other gun for that matter. You reap what you sow. Maybe instead of spending time trying to do something that could get you into more trouble, help some 16 year old kids that may be headed down the crappy path you did at that age, stay out of trouble. That will be a bigger reward than a friggin shotgun.

I don't mean to preach, but it just doesn't sound like a good deal.

If you really need to hunt, you don't need a shotgun
If you really need a shotgun, you don't need to hunt

Just a thought.

Oh yeah, sorry about the "yankee" thing. We have a habit of not forgetting.

do you mean a non-resident of Virginia can buy a long gun like a rifle or shotgun ( modern smokeless ) if they are in Virginia ??

i'm asking as i do have a clean record and do go down to Virginia several times a year ( it's a very beautiful state , hopefully your new governor can do something to get those rest stops back open , they are very nice ) .

i've got most of my family in southern Virginia , and the Carolinas.
