Default Oh NO

I recently returned from a 2 week vacation to find my rifle in not too great condition. The gun was sitting in my room in its soft case and had been experiencing some warm/cold weather. This was somthing i should have been smart enough to avoid but i just completely over looked it. When i opened the case i found a little rust on my barrel, but when i opened the chamber it was really rusted bad. I took apart the gun and cleaned about 80 percent of the rust off. From what i could barely see, there was no rust in the barrel....i find this hard to believe seeing as to how almost everything on the gun had rust on it. Anyways i took it out to shoot and my shots are all over the place....what do you guys think i should do????

Work with oil and steel wool to get rust off. As a last resort, you could try firelapping to get some accuracy back.

I don't beleive that a bore that looks rust-free is the cause of your poor accuracy. You said you tore the gun down, maybe you did not put it back together correctly. You may have too much or not enough torque on an action screw, could have stock pressure against the barrel, etc.

Always check the obvious things first, like scope rings, mounts and the scope itself.

And as you now know, never store a gun in a case if you live in a climate where humidity is an issue.

Shooting abrasive bullets to smooth a bore out. Really, a last resort. It'll accelerate wear to do it. UN listed the major basics. Make sure everything's tight and clean.

If there was rust in the barrel, you could've/would've been able to verify that by running a dry patch through. If the patch came out rusty, then you'd know if there was or wasn't rust in the barrel to start with. Why wouldn't you run patches/clean the barrel before firing it?

I did i ran a patch through the barrel and only a little rust color came out...The bottom line is the gun isnt shooting close to as accurate as it used to....Im just trying to figure out why.
