I have two 597's. They are nice little guns for the money "if" you are pretty much going to leave it alone. Get the Ruger if you want to go mod crazy.
The 597 will take a scope, and Volquartsen makes a nice target hammer and improved extractor for it. Other than some way overpriced special order barrels and two stocks that I know of, there is almost nothing else available for these. With the 10/22 you can add so much aftermarket stuff that there is barely an original part left .
On the plus side, they are reliable, simple to maintain and can be a bit more accurate out of the box than the Ruger. Makes a nice rabbit/squirrel/plinking gun if you take it for what it is out of the box...
The Marlin 60 is a timeless classic if you don't mind a tube fed magazine. I have heard that they can be a bit more finicky about ammo...
