Default Mosin Nagant.

I picked up a 1943 mosin nagant 91/30 and 100shells for $150. The gun is in great shape with all matching serials. i was just wondering if anyone else has got one and if you do what you use it for. I plan on using mine for a yotee gun.

I ouught one a few years ago. I shot it a few times and it was accurate. It now hangs over the fire place. It is certainly powerful to use on deer.

chrony that gun, you WILL be suprised. i helped develope loads for a buddy of mine, i cant remember the exact load he settled on but from the 30 inch barrel it was driving 165's around the same speed of a 300 win mag from a 24 inch barrel. other then having such a long gun, the moisin is the perfect poor mans elk gun.

I would recommend if you step up to big game with it, to get some expanding bullets.
My buddy's dad has carried his several times, and insists on using some FMJ bullets it came with. Lots of tracking and lost deer.

FMJs would definately work on micro-wolves.

As good as an '06 with a proper hunting bullet.

7.62x54R loads with expanding bullets are pretty easy to find and inexpensive. The gun is certainly sufficient for deer if it's accurate. Some Mosin's are very accurate and others are very poor.

The only other practical consideration with the Mosin Nagant is that the iron sights aren't that great, and most have straight bolt handles, making the mounting of optics somewhat more problematic. If you can shoot with the iron sights at reasonable ranges, the 7.62x54R can do the job. The power level is right between the 308 Winchester and the 30-06, both excellent big game cartridges. Wolf makes expanding soft point ammo, as does Prvi Partisan for sure.

the m44 and the 91/30 are very similar and shoot the same bullets. Is one more powerful then the other, or is the barrel just longer on the 91/30?

The M44 is a carbine, where the 91/30 is a battle rifle, the difference being primarily in the barrel length. They both are chambered for the same cartridge (7.62x54R), but the M44 will have somewhat less muzzle velocity because of the shorter barrel. The difference will probably be about 200 fps give or take. Again, within the suitable range for employing the rather poor iron sights, the performance difference is inconsequential.
