From MY experience? 100 yards.

The SKS is not by nature a tack-driver, nor is the 7.62x39 a long-range round. You should be able to place most rounds into an 8" plate at 100 yards, but probably not very consistently beyond that.

my sks has 1000 yd sights on it,so i guess the range is 1000yds. no really ,mine shoots about 2in groups at 100yds. good enough to hunt with at reasonable ranges. i killed a nice 11 pt buck with mine a few years back at about 75yds. one shot in the base of the neck dropped him in his tracks. i was shooting remington ammo. i bought mine and 1500 rounds of ammo very cheap just for self defense. i have 5 30rnd mags, thats alot of fire power if and when i ever need it.

The SKS was designed with the intention to hit a man sized target at 300 meters. Obviously scoping one will provide much better accuracy over the iron sights. Now on to the subject of this being a Norinco, the Chinese made SKS's were the cheapest of the lot and made with the lowest quality parts, so it is what it is. I'd say most likely you can stay on a pie plate out to 200 yds.

Most of the scpe mounts for the SKS are pretty shoddy. The only mount that is really any good is the Choate and it requires that the receiver be drilled and tapped.

My SKS actually isn't horrible in the accuracy department- the sights are terrible, though. With the factory sights I can keep it in a 2" circle at 50 yards and a 4" circle at 100 yards, give or take. I'm pretty sure the gun would shoot a little better than that with better sights. I've heard that most of the scope mounts for SKS suck, but I haven't tried one personally. With a good scope & mount you might have a 200 yard gun.

My brother's father-in-law hunts with a scoped SKS, and he shoots deer as far as 200 yards. Bear in mind that he's not really interested in the one-shot-one-kill principle, though, as he readily admits that he'll shoot as many times as he has to to connect. He had a 30 rd mag and carries over 100 rounds into the field with him, and he'll use all of them in a season to take 5 or 6 deer. But it gets the job done.
