Default Ai ?

Would a non-AI cartridge fit in an AI action?

If so what would the result be?

The result would be fire-formed brass. For example, someone who shoots a 260ai, would fire 260 rem. to fire-form their brass.

P.O. Ackley designed his improved cartridges in such as way as to be able to fire the parent cartridge. He accomplished this by setting the neck / shoulder intersection rearward toward the breech about .005 inches in the design. The parent cartridge will therefore headspace on that intersection instead of the shoulder. Once fired the brass will be to the dimensions of the Improved chamber. Accuracy will more than likely suffer when shooting the parent cartridge in the improved chamber.

Not always...my ackley shot a .25" 3-shot group at 100 while fireforming...

.........Absolutely correct...........My .243 AI didn't shoot the parent .243 Win. quite that well, but I was surprised at how well it did. I've heard other Ackley owners tell the same story.

That happened when all the stars were aligned...its usually around .4 - .7 depending on how impatient I am when fireforming...

yep as long as your not moving the shoulder forewards like you do in the gibbs and Lazer line of cartridges, firefor groups are kinda scary in most rifles.
Here is a fireform group from my 7mm Allen Mag (sort of a 7mm/338 lapua AI)
Keep in mind this is a cartridge that burns over 100 gr. of powder for a full power hunting load, hunting loads usualy run in the low .2.s at 100, .8 at 300, and just over 4" at 830 yards.

My 6.5 Gibbs doesn't fare this well fireforming, but its moving the shoulder foreward about .100" when making cases.

That was part of Parker Ackleys plan, if you lost your ammo on an out of state hunt for some reason, you could go buy a box of the parent ammo and still get by. or you could just buy factory ammo and use it to hunt and make cases while your at it.
