Default Finally got the Ruger No 1--

Got my Ruger No 1, in 45-70, and thought I'd ask some of you what to expect in the way of accuracy from this round. Iv'e never owned anything in 45-70 so I could use some information. It'll be used to hunt pigs, probabely within 50 to 200 or so yards-----John

I have the old #3 in 45-70. If I do my part, it will shoot 1 1/2" groups at 100 with the proper load. I should tell you however, that some of the "experts" will tell you that the 45-70 is no more than a 150 yard gun. Now, I would never think to argue with an expert, but I have taken woodchucks at over 200 with mine.
Take the time to work up a good handload, and you will be amazed what that ole cartridge will do. Be prepared however, some of those really heavy loads are killers at both ends of the rifle. If you are recoil sensitive, you are not going to be having a fun day with them.
My boar load is a Hornady 350 gr. at 2100fps. This will get your attention.
Good luck with the #1

Congrats on the #1. IMO, it's elegant and solid as all get out!

Yankee Doodle and Bugs--thanks, I know you know what it feels like to have waited for a long time and then finally be in a position to pick up something like this. I guess my thinking is, if this was one of the calibers used when hunting buffalo, it will be accurate enough for anything I'm hunting. ----------John
