Default balistic tip = hollow point

Correct me if I am wrong but a BT bullet is nothing more then an HP bullet with a platic tip filling that hole and giving it a point for coefficiency (sp)

Correct...and because the tip is holllow the center of gravity is moved back which helps make the bullet more accurate...

not really, todays nosler BT's come in 2 different configurations. if they are packaged 100 or 250 per box they are a thin jacketed HP with a polymer tip. if they are packaged 50 per box they are designed for med. thin skinned game, as a matter of fact they are the exact same bullet as the nosler solid base boattail with a polymer tip instead of lead.

Yip, Noslter has one poly tipped bullet that they designate as "Varmint" and another poly tipped bullet designated as "Hunting". The Varmint bullet has a much thinner jacket for a more violent/quicker expansion.
As far as that goes, not all hollow points are created equal either. But as was mentioned, in general, the poly tipped bullets are designed for flatter trajectorys with higher bc's.

Ya I know nosler comes in two different configurations, one for varmints and one for medium game, I dont think packaging has anything to do with it though, the smaller calibers are generally for varmints and the bigger for deer. Orange tip= varmints and green tip = deer.
I dont see how the nosler solid is the same, the solid is just that, solid= no lead at all.

You are correct. But the plastic tip changes the way it expands by acting as a wedge......

The color tips on BT's are caliber specific
.224 is orange
.243 purple
.257 blue
.264 brown
.277 yellow
.284 red
.308 green
When nosler first came out with the BT's folks were amazed at how well they shot, but the 30's and 284's were very tender when fired from the magnum cases even guys shooting 30/06's were having violent expansion. the bullets were all packaged 100 per box, with the exception of .224's and .243's which you could buy in varminter packs of 250.
Nosler took the med game weight bullets in cal. starting with the .243 95 gr. the .257 100 and 115 gr the .264 100 gr, the 270's, 284.s. and 308's. They made the jacket thicker and basicly made todays ballistic tips the exact same bullet as the old standby the nosler solid base boattail which was long touted as a great game bullet. and these bullets are packaged 50 per box. So if you buy nosler BT's with 50 per box they are suitable for deer, the rest are varmint bullets.Today nosler has discontinued regular production of the SBBT and just make limited runs when demand is high.
