While the .270 win. is a great whitetail round, I'm wondering how well it works on larger hogs.
I've only killed a few big pigs with a .270 and had "mixed" results. A couple tipped right over where they stood and a couple ran a ways (50-75 yards) before giving up.
All were shot with 130gr. Remington Cor-Lokt ammo.
The few I've shot with a .30-06 never ran. Just fell over and kicked some. All those were 165gr. Cor-Lokts or Hornady Interbonds.
Pretty much the same bang/flop when using a 7mm Mag too.
Jus wondering what result fills who have lots more kills with the .270 have experienced with it.
Pretty much talking heart/lung/shoulder shots.
It's not at all unusual for any animal to run some distance even with well placed hits and proper bullets. From what I've seen over the last 30yrs it's the norm rather than the exception.
The 270 is more than up to the task of killing large hogs. I would step up to a larger bullet weight and use a bullet type such as a nosler partition or hornady interbond, etc. I think with a bullet change you'll see a marked improvement.
Try a heavier and/or tougher bullet. The 130gr Core-Lock is a rapid expansion bullet, but hogs are said to have a layer of grissly "armor" in their chests that may not be allowing enough oh the bullet to get through to produce a quick kill. To give a close comparison, I had a 150gr Core-lock from my .30-06 disintegrate on impact at 125 yards after hitting the back of the shoulder and 3 ribs going into a deer. It killed her DRT, but she was a small deer (maybe 125 lbs on the hoof), and deer aren't quite as tough as hogs I'm told.
If I were going to be shooting at piggies with a rifle, expecially if I knew I might see some big ones, I'd definitely opt for a Barnes TSX. I'd go with the 100gr for my 257 Wby, and if I had a 270 I'd go with the 130gr version.
The 270 is more than up to the task of killing large hogs. I would step up to a larger bullet weight and use a bullet type such as a nosler partition or hornady accubond, etc. I think with a bullet change you'll see a marked improvement.
The Accubond is a Nosler bullet, BTW. Hornady makes the Interbond.
The .270 is more than enough for hogs. I frequently use a .243, a 30-06 or a bow.....there is a guy on here who kills a lot of them with a .22 Hornet. Just put the bullet where it is supposed to go, and they will go down.
