I am from Canada. I don't know if the cost of ammunition in the U.S. has sky rocketed like here. I have not checked into centerfire ammo yet, only because I don't need it now, but I recently purchased 2 boxes of Winchester .17 HMR for a whopping $17.99 a box! That is a $5 increase from about 4-5 months ago when I bought them for $12.99. Just wondering if anyone can explain why this is? Thanks to all those who respond.

A golf course is a willful and deliberate misuse of a perfectly good rifle range.
The last time I looked at factory ammo on the shelf Federal Premium 300-WSM ammo was $12.00 per box higher than Federal Premium 300-Winchester mag ammo.
Both boxes were loaded with premium bulles.
The 300-WSM could have been the latest ammo to hit the shelf & the 300-win mag could have been from last year???
It is strictly greed greed greed $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Strictly supply and demand...

Rationally thinking about this, the price of copper, brass, and lead are down dramatically since last summer/fall. The manufacturers are making as much ammo as they possibly can. These two factors should be bringing prices down.
It's demand by the greedy consumer that is causing this. Ammo is flying off the shelf, even at terribly inflated prices. I paid $13/box for 50 9mm bullets last February. Just noticed today that they are $35, and saw people buying them! I will not buy at this price -- no way. Only a crazy, irrational consumer would do that.
What would happen to ammo prices if we all the sudden stopped buying, or even bought rational amounts? They'd come down dramatically.
What's wrong with a person, or business, making money if it's done within a fair, competitive environment? Are we drinking the anti business, anti success, Obama Socialist Kool Aid?

They are going to set the prices to meet demand. If no one was willing to pay $35 for 9mm rounds, the they wouldnt be so high. But, due to Obama's inauguration many people became fearful of just how long they would be able to buy bullets at all. Then there was the whole fiasco where they were talking about requiring the manufacturers to print a serial # on every single round. The craze is all slowing down if you ask me... I now see more ammo on the shelves then I did 2 months ago. Ammo will be back down by November if you ask me. Just my $0.02
