Default Sighting in trouble!!??

I bought a new 30-06Remington 750 Carbine with a Pentax 3.5x10 scope. I used a very steady shooting bench and couldn't get a group better than 5 or 6 inches at 50 yards!!!!
The gun is a semi auto and is a carbine so I understand its not gonna shoot .5 inch groups each time, but come on, 5 inches!!!!
What should I do to get the gun to shoot better? All help is wanted.
Thanks

I had the same gun and it was horribly inaccurate, but not that bad. Are your scope rings tight?

The first thing I would do is take off the scope and shoot it with the open sights. If it is shooting decently, reinstall the bases and use loctite. Then put the scope back on. Now do not overtighten the screws on the scope rings. 25 inch pounds is all that is required to keep the scope from slipping. You don't have to bear down on the ring screws. Overtightening can lead to scope failure.
If its shooting worse that with the open sights, than you probably have a bad scope.

5 or6 inch group would have to be the sights or the shooter at fifty yards . I have seen a guy shoot 25-06 shells in a 270 win and it shot a better group than that . Check the scope to see if it hasn't been damaged would be my guess.

Yea...sounds like the scope. You probably could sight down the side of the barrel and do better than 5" at 50y.hehehe

You didn't say what ammo you are using. Try some with 180-grain bullets, and by all means make sure all scope mounting screws and the buttstock through-bolt are tight. This is NOT a sighting-in problem. It is an accuracy problem. You need to get it sorted out before you can sight it in! That rifle should be capable of at least 2 MOA groups, but you may need to try several different types of ammo to get the best performance.
