Default Gun? Zero? Range?

Stubblejumper's trajectory post got me to thinking about how far some of you guys shoot. I was wondering what guns you guys shoot and what is your maximum effective range. I was also wondering what distance you zeroed each of those guns. I'm no long range shooter, so my distances won't be as long as most of your's but I'll still list all of mine. My rifles all shoot better than I do and are capable of longer distances. These are the distances that have practiced and I know I am capable of. I'm glad we foundly found a place to shoot longer distances living in Denver.

.223 200 yard zero 300 maximum (350 goal for summer)
.243250 yard zero400 maximum
.270 250 yard zero400 maximum
30.06 200 yard zero300 maximum
300RUM 250 yard zero400 maximum

I practice enough at 500 yards with my 270 to know I have no business trying a shot like that while hunting. 350 is better for me in the field. I always find it hard to believe the difference from400 to 500 yards. You better know your stuff to try a shot like that.

I believe most of my rifles are sighted at 200 zero. I print a small label to stick on the scope to give me adjustments out to a 500 yd. zero. For big game I have not found it necessary to make any change because I rarely shoot beyond 350 at big game. I do have a pretty good collection of prairie dog rifles and they require very specific adjustments and consistent ammo to be effective beyond 200 yds. and critical if you plan to shoot to 450-500yd.
Like you I live in CO and have access to a large farm to the east of the front range, we can shoot some very long range if you choose. Prairie dogs out beyond 600 is a real poke.
I have practiced well beyond 600 and have on occasion witnessed some amazing shots by others. Some of these guys east of the Mississippi have no idea. How about a fast twist .204 Ruger dropping coke bottle sized prairie dogs .....two in a row standing on the same mound ...642 yds. Or my good friend Ray shooting a custom cut Contender with a confirmed kill right at 750 yds., handgun barrel.

I dont like to shoot too far away... too long of a walk to get the critter!hehehe
Most of us back east just run em' up in the back of the truck and take em' to the house.lol
I sent quite a few way,way downrange while in the Navy. I get a kick out of some ofthese movies, and some folks for that matter, that talk of rifle missiles knocking stuff (emphasis added) down at8,9,and 1000m.
In my younger years I shot long range compitition... dont do it anymore for statues of glass and plastic.
Most of my eastern equipment enjoy a 200y zero... with poop sheets in my pocket, for come-up.
In reality... on deer sized game, any high power rifle, sighted at 200y or so will drop thebullet spot on out to 400y without any math to do.
The safe has some 30 caliber units with 400 to 600 yard zeros. And afew 22 caliber sweethearts sighted from 300 to 433 yards. I know, 433? just the way it worked out.lol
30-06,24"bbl,165gr@3000fps,200yzero.
7mm saum,22"bbl,150gr@3049fps,200yzero.
7mm-08,18"bbl,139gr@2900fps,100yzero.
Just a few of the "back east" rifles and their zeros.
