RE: Realistic range for a .17 HMR
After reading all the reports, hype and all that ranged from the best new cartridge ever introduced, perfectly suitable for all small game up to and including small deer, to, absolutely worthless for anything except plinking, too big for squirrels, not big enough for anything else.
I bought one to find out for myself, my thoughts so far with limited use, but I have used the 17 HM2 for small game hunting for a couple years. I'm leaning this way (absolutely worthless for anything except plinking, too big for squirrels, not big enough for anything else.)
It would be awesome for prairie dogs and other small non-edible game, but here where I hunt other than crows woodchucks are about the smallest non-edible game we have. My findings are up to about 8 pound game weight it does well, heavier game than that takes almost exact bullet placement or recovery becomes diffacult.
young of the year groundhogs are easily dispatched with solid body shots, but the older, larger adults almost always get back to the den unless you head shoot them or break the spine.
as far as range capabilities, you could easily hit your target at 200 yards with no wind but killing it may be a different story.
