Default Ruger SR9 ?

Does anyone know if the Ruger SR9 is approved for +P rounds? What about +P+? I don't have the manual in front of me or I'd check it. I was hoping maybe someone on here would know.

I suggest e-mailing Ruger for their answer. I just looked at the on-line manual, and I do not see anything regarding +P or +P+ ammo. IF it is approved for +P, and you are looking for self defense ammo -you may want to check out the Black Hills with a Speer Gold Dot (115 or 124grain)or the Remington Golden Saber.

Not sure about the ammo but wanted to know how you like the SR9? Picked one up in a gun store a few months back and must say that it felt extremely good in my hand.

If you find out the answer to your question, check out DoubleTap ammo. They make some great self defense rounds. Shoots very good in my Glocks.

I gave Ruger a call as I'm too lazy to dig through the files to find the manual and I don't remember seeing it in there when I read it but it may have said. I may still go get the manual to read to double check. I got transfered to a few people. The first person told me to call sales and gave me a number. The sales lady didn't know so she transfered me to service. When I asked them the lady immediately said it was approved for +P ammo. I then asked about +P+ and she said she didn't know to let her check. She then came back and said yes it will take it too. So I'm assuming they know what they are talking about.

As for ammo I already have several kinds so I'm not ordering anymore right now although I may someday so thanks for the recommendations. Right now I have some Speer Gold Dot +P ammo for it. I have the magazine loaded with it that's why I just wanted to make sure it was approved and okay to shoot it./

I also have the second magazine loaded with Federal Hydroshock ammo but it is not +p or anything it's just regular old ammo.

I have on order some of the Winchester SXZ hollow points from Bass Pro. This is the ammo exclusive to Bass Pro. It's on backorder. I'm not sure if I will shoot any of it or not. I may shoot one box just practicing with it and may load one magazine with it not sure. It will more than likley just stay in the gun cabinet though as I more just wanted it for the cool factor. When I emailed Winchester about it they told me that it was the exact same as the USA line aka white box stuff except for the black coating. Are those any good for self defense or should I stick with the Speers and Federals?

Of the Speer and Federals which are a better round to have in the magazine in the gun?

I love it. It has a manual safety which I like. I really wanted this and not many of the newer pistols I've seen have them. It also has a trigger safety put on after the recall. The only complaint I've ever read is that the trigger feels "gritty" My 10/22 is a little like that but does not bother me. I don't notice it so much with this gun but it might a little I'm not sure. Doesn't bother me on the 10/22 either but I can tell it's there. I think the trigger pull is just about perfect for me as I love how it feels. I just all around think this is one of the best feeling guns I've head and it doesn't shoot bad either. It's had a few hundred rounds though it and never jammed or stove piped once. *Knock on wood* It's not the most accurate thing ever but good enough and most of that is probably me as a buddy shot it and didn't seem to have problems hitting what he wanted. He shot the cap off of a bottle at about 20 yards with it the first time he ever shot it.

I can't hit much at 25 yards. At about 20 I can hit stuff but out of the 17 in the magazine only 3-4 will hit stuff if that. At 10 years or so I can hit the target pretty well. At 5 yards I'm very good with it but 5 yards is super close. At 10 I'm not bad with it. Past 10 yards I'm not the best with it. It's just me I think though as I'm still practicing and I'm getting better. I think a good part of it is my sights just need a slight adjusting.

This is probably one of my favorite guns I've shot to be honest. Mine got dropped in a driveway and has a few small deep scratches in the metal and most of you know how OCD I am about my stuff looking perfect so that bugs me but that isn't the fault of the gun and more than likely unless you were checking the gun over up close you'd never even see them. From 2-5 feet away it looks about perfect.

If you have any specific questions about how anything is on this gun I can try to answer them but for the most part I love this gun and would recommend it.

Don't use a load for sd unless you have shot at least 100 continuousrounds of that ammo to see if it causes a problem. You don't want to find out you have a problem when you need the firearm to fire. One thing about BlackHills - they haveverygood ammo at a lower cost than the manufacures likeSpeer, Federal or Remington. I also suggest buying some dummy blank loads. Have a friend load your magazine. When you shoot the dummy load, your gun should not move. If it does you are flinching.

I have shot the Winchester USA in 115 gr hp. For my firearm, this is a very accurate round; and very little recoil. IMO, I would choise a bullet between 115 gr to 130 gr (prefer the 124 gr), and stay away from the 147 gr for anything but target practice. I prefer the +P in GD115 grif I am not where a mountain lion could be or +P inGD124 gr if a big cat could be around (a +P+ load would be better than +P for mountain lions). I DON'T recommend a 9mm for big cats. I suggest a 357 Mag with a 4" to 6" barrel and agood hunting bullet.

Why is 147 grain bad? I think my Speers are 147 and my Federals are 124. I think but am not positive. My target rounds are 115 grain.

Also why 100 rounds? Why not just 50? If it didn't jam any in 50 rounds wouldn't that be good enough. I want to shoot them in it some more but I just don't want to spend $120 on ammo or more to test it out.

That is why I go with Black Hills with the Gold Dot. I prefer 100 rounds as the test as that is my preference.

Years ago, most LE agencies were using the 9MM. You hadmore than oneinstance where a perp took many hits from the 9and still survived. Not long after that, a lot of LEagencies left the 9 for a 40 or 45. When they studied to see what happened in these situations, most appeared to be a case where the bullet did not perform as it was intended. It was/is believed by some that the 147 gr bullet did not provide an expansion that was quick enough orbig enough to be effective. A 147gr. may give you more penetration, but I don't plan on shooting through doors or walls.Maybe the GD in 147 will performadequately. Ihope I never have to shoot in a SD sitution, but if I do it will be at the threat and not at a door, wall or other object.
