Default suprise model 70

in 2006 my brother bought a winchester model70 xtr in 30-06. i ought it from my rother earllier this year. well i took it to the locl gun shop for trigger work and he said that it was really much older. according to the serial number it was made in or around the year 1980. how cool is that to get a 28 year old rifle new in the box. i guess it was just sitting on the shelf for 25 or so years. not to mention now that the new haveb factory is now closed. i will post pic soon

I don't know about ALL Model 70's, but the pre-64's had their year of manufacturestamped on the bottom of the receiver ring. For example, my pre-64 Supergrade 375 H&H was stamped "49", and it conforms to the pattern of those made in 1949. My 1954 Featherweight had "54" on it. You have to remove the barreled action from ths stock to see the number....

i did find the number 79 on the bolt but donlt know if that is significant
