Default Is the 308 the best all around round?

I'm thinking of buying a Tikka 308. I've never shot a 308 but I want something I can hunt Yotes with with its not deer season but hunt deer with also. I know ammo is very easy to come by. Whats all of your thoughts?

I'd get a 243 if your getting it to hunt 'yotes/deer with.

I'd get a .30-06. It's not too big and definitely not too small. People shoot whitetails, elk, caribou, hogs with them and never have issues taking them down as long as shot placement is good. And the ammo is easy to find and comes in the widest variety I've seen.

I vote the 30-06 too. Being able to load up 200 grain bullets for really big game, or loading down with 130's for the small stuff makes it a little more usefull in my opinion.

Nothing wrong with the .308, ballistically and for accuracy,it rocks.

The .308 is a great round but for both deer and varmints there are better choices.I'd look at the .243,.257 Roberts,.257 Weatherby and the 25-06.That said it's not a bad idea to use your primary big game rifle on varmints just to get to know it better. As such the .308,7mm's,30-06,etc would all be a fine choice.

you can make a very good argument that .308 is the best all around caliber. Its is basically the equal of a .30-06, the only difference being you can load a 200 grain bullet in the 06. However IMO you will probably be able to kill anything that needs killing in North America with a good 180 grain .308

I guess I am not following the norm here but I hate the 308. Having shot a number of deer with the 243, 7-08 and 308 - the 308 takes a back seat to either of the other 2.
It is an excellent target round but I for one do not like it for hunting. I'm sure I will get feedback on this but I guess I have my own opinion.

For just Deer/Coyotes I would look at a 7mm-08 but if you are looking at a true all-around round (varmint - moose) look at a 30-06 or a 300 wsm.
