I'm thinkinking of getting into the world of the AR and was wondering if any of you hunt with your AR? If so, what bullet are you usingon what game? Any pics of guns or game taken would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
i do hunt with my ARs: Wild hogs exclusively. A hog hit well with the 55 grainbullet from the M193 military round just flops over dead about 90 percent of the time.
It's my deer, bear, boar rifle. I hunt with 110gr Sierra prohunters and will be using the TSXs for boar in january. it's a 6.8 I put together, barrel is Cardinal Armory and that target is 5-shots inside 3/4" at 100yards

I have a bullbarreled flattop dpms in .223 and it's my go to gun for yotes. Yotes, groundhogs, and playing is the ONLY things it's going to be used for with 55 gr softpoints. The other evening it all came together and I was able to shoot 3 yotes out of a pack! I NEVER could have gotten that many if not for that AR or rifle similar to it. As to deer and defense,I prefer a bigger cartridge as I don't trust a groundhog rifle for battle/deer hunting.

If hunting with a semiauto rifle is legal where and for what you intend to hunt, as has already been suggested, there can be a variety of calibers available.
Generally though, the AR-15 is a .223 (not legal/sufficient in some states for big game). HOWEVER... Numerous options can be had that "fit" an AR-15 lower reciever that might be better hunting rounds: 6.8 SPC, and a bunch of .45-.50 caliber jobs such as the Bushmaster or the Beowulf.
On the other hand, an AR-10 is capable of handling longer cartridges through its magazine well and action, such as .243, .308, the WSSMs, and even a WSM (I think), etc. A bit more expensive, but if you want to be able to hunt big game, the AR-10 platform is probably going to be your better bet.
I hunt turkeys, coyotes, and prairie dogswith my AR (and a five-round magazine to be compliant with local laws). My most often-used load is a 60 gr Hornady SP backed by Varget or BL(C)-2. For varmints exclusively, I've been using 50 gr V-Maxes and Varget.
My Rock Ribver Varminter is the best darn short range(under 400 yards) ground hog and coyote rifle I have ever owned. And I have been hunting them for close to 40 years. IMO the AR platform extends the range of the 223 Remington about 100 yards, because it allows the delivery of an instant double tap. This double tap stops crawl off. And I hate crawl offs. I use a 50 grain V-Max bullet. Tom.

Thanks for the info guys. I would like to hunt deer and bear with the gun, so i guess the AR-10 is more the way to go. Have any of you taken a deer or bear with an AR?
I don't mean to hijack the thread but I had a question of my own on this subject... I understand that the 5.56 mm is comperable to a .223so along that lines of thinking is the 6.8 equivalent to a readily available hunting round or is it only a military round as of now? I believe that this round would be enough to take a deer or antelope. What are your thoughts?
I have 4 AR's that I use for hunting, a 223 lightweight for a calling rifle, a 24" 8 twist varminter that I use for chucks and crows, a 25 wssm that I use for deer hunting and a 458 socom that I carry in the thick stuff bear hunting. pics of game are just too numerous to mention. but they are the ultimate hunting platform for med. range hunting.
