Default beginner needs help

Hi, im new to hunting and I was wondering what would be a good reasonable priced $400ish bolt action rifle in a 30-06 or 308 win. would be? My dad has a model 700 which I like but a new one costs a bit more than what I want to spend. Is there anything out there that would be good for a beginner on a budget? I would consider buying used if I knew the gun was worth it.

Have not priced one lately but maybe a Savage? Saw a Remington 700 ADL at a WalMart several weeks back for $459.

Some inexpensive (not cheap) rilfes that come to mind are Savage, Tikka, Marlin, Mossberg, and even the Weatherby Vangard. These can all be had for probably closer to $500.
But like was posted earlier, don't hesitate about looking on the used shelves. Expecially this time of year. For some reason guy trade in perfectly good rifles for new ones come hunting season.

I agree with bronko, hit the local gun shops! Money is tight this year for most and I bet after deer season the shelves will be packed full of good quality used rifles. I wish I had the extra cash, cause I already passed on a lot of good deals. If used is not the route you want to take, check out Savage 111, Marlin xl-7, Stevens 200. All can be had for around $300-$400.

If rugermike offers it,you KNOW it's a good rifle-as is just about any ruger I've ever seen. About the only gripes I've heard 1sthand is a few rugers aren't as accurate as they wanted-still I'm a ruger/browning man. As to the cheapest new rifles I've got experience with, savage and marlin are both solid performers beyond their price.

Savage, Stevens (low-priced Savage), Mossberg.

Or buy a used one off of an auction site......
