Default 300 Mag ??

Buddy just called and said he has Winchester Model 70 that has the words "300 Mag" stamped on the barrel. He says it does not say 300 Win Mag or WSM or WBY Mag etc, just 300 Mag. What cartridge is this?

I don't think that Winchester ever made a 300 Wby, but I could be wrong.

Wsm's are in a short action and the Win. Mag is in a long action.

The best thing though is to call winchester and check the serial # against there records.

If its been rebarreled he may need a gunsmith to make a mold of the chamber to find out for sure.

Don't forget about the 300 H&H.

Most likely a 300 Win but best to have a 'smith check it out. Sounds like a rebarrel job with that stamp, have that smith check the headspace as well when he figures out what exactly your buddy bought. Safety first!!

You're pulling our leg right? I've never seen a barrel stamped 300 mag regardless whether it was an original barrel or a rebarrel.

IF it is a pre-64 M70, it is most likely chambered for the .300 H&H Magnum, rather than any of the ones you listed. IF it is a pre-64 in .300 H&H, it is worth more than most other calibers would be....

Thanks. Obviously he's going to have to call winchester or go to a smith
