youth deer rifle

I am looking on getting my son a youth model rifle.Looking at the Remington model 7 youth in 7mm-08 or the Savage 10gy youth in 308.I really do not want a 243 as I feel he can handle the bigger loads.He already shoots trap and taget shoots a fair amount.Any thoughts on these guns or others in the same price range.Thanks

y not a cheaper 30-06 in a light gun its a good round without much kick!

Remington model 7s are great. My son uses one in .260 Remington. My personal opinion is that either the .260 or 7mm/08 is a perfect first caliber. I don' t have any other experience with other youth rifles, but a Ruger model 77 with the 22 inch barrel fits my 13 year old pretty well too.

Hmm, I beg to differ but most light rifles chambered in 30-06 are not what most would consider a mild recoiling rifle.

If I am not mistaken you can also get the Savage youth model chambered in 7mm-08 Rem. Savage rifles are reliable, shoot great and are fairly affordable. I like the Remington model 7 as well so it is a toss-up, but I can' t recommend the 7mm-08 Rem cartridge enough. I used to shoot a 300 Win Mag until I discovered the 7mm-08. Now it is about the only thing I take into the deer woods.

I dunno what your talking about a 30-06 hardly kicks at all but thats just my experience i shoot one when i was 10 and didnt bug me a bit, just depends on the build or uh physical and mental strength of the person i guess you cant let your kid think its gonna hurt because then it will[8D]

The Model 7 will be fine in either 7mm-08 or .260 Rem. Both will make great " grown up" deer rifles, as well.

i second what frizz has said about the 30-06sprg with milder recoiling rounds. my browning medallion chmabered in 30-06sprg has a alot more kick with 150gr' s than my savage 10FCM in 308win using 180gr. bullets.
i like the idea of the 260rem in a model 7 youth rifle. but i would base your options on what you are gonna hunt. maybe a 270win he might find a better choice?

I agree with frizzellr,the 30-06 is not a light kicker especially in a light weight rifle,your son will enjoy shooting a 260rem or 7mm-08 much better & probably become a better hunter because of it.

A model 7 rem would be a good choice,also look at the remington mountain rifle.

I' m a big fan of tikka rifles & have a continental(heavy barrel) in 7mm-08 & am most impressed with it & would recommend them to you,I think the whitetail model weighs about 71/2 pounds in 7mm-08 & I think it would be ideal for your son,I dont know how much the tikkas are worth over your way but check them out.

You might get a handirifle in youth model or regular superlight. they have .243, .270, .280, 7mm-08, 30-30, 30-06, and .308... It is not expensive and you can get all sorts of barrels, even muzzleloading and shotgun.. It is a single shot so it is a good one to start with and grow with. You can even buy the youth model and then get a regular stock later I think for $31..
