Adding sling mounts to a Remington 870
I have a Remington 870 Express Super Magnum I want to add the mounts for a sling to.
Do I need a new cap with the mount in it? What' I'm talking about is the cap that you remove to remove the barrel and or the plug and all. The one you just screw on. I know it should have a sling mount there but mine has a hole in it. Can you use this or do I need a new one? Then for the rear sling mount I assume I just need to drill into the wood.
I have a gun shop that I'm taking it to for them to put it on but I didn't think to ask if I needed a new cap thing or not.

If there isn't already a hole in your magazine cap, you can easily drill one or have a GS drill it. They you can buy the threaded stud and nut to install. The rear is simply a coarse (wood) thread that goes into the stock about 2 - 3" from the end. A bit of advice - when you install the front swivel stud via a nut, peen the edge of the stud a bit so the nut will not back off completely.

These are about the easiest ones out there.

you just have to bore out the hole a little so the swivel mounts will fit in and drill a hole in the stock to put in the other one. no new cap should be needed

Does the screw hit the part that holds the spring in when you put it through the cap? The piece you have to push down and twist to remove? Or does this not matter? That's something I wasn't sure of.

Well, went to the gun shop and they put one on for $3. That was what they charged me for parts and labor. I'm happy with that and the one they put in the cap swivels so it's not fixed either which I like. I'm happy with the $3 I spent and glad I didn't do it myself as the kits at Wal-Mart were like $8 or 9. Granted they did come with swivels for the sling which I didn't get at gun shop however, all 3 slings I have came with them so I didn't need them anyway and just in case I ever need them I have a kit at home. I'm thinking of having mounts put on my Ruger 10/22 now but I'm not sure if I want to or not. I'm just happy with the $3 price haha.

I have a sling on my Rem 870 Express 12GA that is from Outdoor Connection. It came complete with the magazine cap, camo sling, and also has a velcro strap that attaches around the butt stock, so there is no need to drill for a swivel stud.
It looks like this (sorry, the pic is poor quality from a website I lifted it from).

That setup looks cool. How much was that? They just used the existing hole in the cap on my gun and put a stud through that and a nut on the inside and it swivels. Then drilled in the rear. I ended up buying a camo Claw sling. I had a black one and got another black one while I was in there and a camo one.
I really like those slings.
