Please bare with me, I don' t know much about firearms so I won' t be able to tell you what the exact names of certain things are.
I moved a few months ago and had my shotgun (Remington 870) in it' s original box, I moved it myself because I only moved 30 minutes away. I went to go get it out of the box so I can shoot it before turkey season and I noticed that the pump was stuck in the top position, the barrel was off. The pump finally went back with a little wiggling. I unscrewed the part you need to unscrew to put the barrel on (it is where you attach the sling to near the end of the barrel), I tilt the gun a little so I can put the barrel on and a big chunk of metal falls out of the gun (more than one part in the chunk) followed by the pump itself. The pump will slide back in a little but won' t go in all the way. The big chunk that fell out has a spring in it, it looks to me that it is the part that is behind the shells and it strikes the shells...not really sure about that though. I am posting here to see if it is an easy fix, if it is not I will bring it to a gunsmith this weekend....If anyone can help me out here and tell me if I can fix this myself or at least tell me what happened (lol) I would really appreciate it. I had never had a problem like this with this gun and I have had it for years.
From what it sounds like it is the bolt. Is it the piece that slides back and forth inside the ejection port and won' t move now? I had that problem after I took it apart the first time. I had to tap out the trigger assembly pins remove the trigger assembly and reposition the bolt. If you still have the instruction book disassembly/ reassembly instructions are in it. You can download a pdf copy from Remington' s web site. If your not comfortable disassembling your gun, go to a gun shop or a smith.

Sorry but I can' t post a pic because I don' t have a digital camera.
I guess it is the bolt...because it is the part that moves back and forth inside the ejection port. I don' t know why it did this, I didn' t even attempt to take it apart, it just fell out. How you guys explain it, it seems to me that the bolt got stuck and that is why the pump wouldn' t move, but that still doesn' t explain why the bolt just fell out without any tampering. Thanks for the help, I will see if I can take it to a gun shop this weekend. Hopefully I can get it repaired before turkey season, still got a couple weeks so I don' t think there will be a problem there.
I downloaded the instruction book and it is the " Breech Bolt" that fell out. It seems like I can do this myself and I tried, it says to push on the right shell latch and I don' t know what that is, I pressed on everything I could find and nothing seems to work. If I can' t get it I will take it to my Uncle' s house this weekend, I think he will be able to fix it. Thanks for all the help.
Ok, heres what to do: FIrst make sure it is unloaded!!! Take a punch of some sort (brass would be better, you wil have to use a small hammer to punch the pins out). Punch out the two pins that hold the trigger assembly in (on either side of the receiver). Grab the trigger guard and peel out from front to back the trigger assembly. Then, put the breech bolt back on the slide, making sure that the two part assembly fits the cut out parts on the slide rails. Then slide the slide and breech bolt back into the receiver, put the trigger assembly beck in, install the pins and you should be good. To avoid this of happening again, when you take the barrel off do not tilt the receiver toward the ground, if you do the breech bolt will slide forward again. If it does happen again just point the receiver up and shake it and try to pull the slide back, I have found with mine that this will work most times.
purep. After you remove the trigger assembly. On the ejection port side of the receiver is the shell latch. It looks like a flat spring and a slight bend on the end. It' s attached about half way up on the side of the receiver. That' s what you need to depress. It' s quite simple. Just take your time. It' s staked in so you shouldn' t have a problem with it coming loose.
