Default What brand/model would you purchase in a .270 wsm or 30-06?

I have a browning 7mm rem mag a-bolt with synthetic stock now and I've had it for a while so I was thinking about picking up a new gun this year. I've been considering either a .270 wsm or a 30-06 since I don't think I need to a 7mm mag when most all the deer I'm going to be shooting at will <100-200 yards. I'm having a hard time deciding on what brand and model to go with though. I'll spend as much as $1,000 if I find something I really like but I'd rather stick in the $600-$800 range. Personally I sorta like the stainless steel models like the Browning X-bolt Stainless Stalker and the Remington 700 SPS SS but I'm also looking at some of Savages more expensive models to see what they have. Can anyone give me some ideas on what they would buy in one of those two calibers??

Also, would you say that gunbroker.com is a good option for a new rifle if I buy from a reputable seller as far as prices go? Or should I just stick with going to Bass Pro, Walmart, or a local gun store?? Trying to find the best deal for a NIB.

I already bought my scope which is a Bushnell 4200 Elite 2.5-10x50 w/ Illuminated reticle.

Thanks for any help guys!!

I'm not clear as to why you'd want a 270wsm or .30-06 as they are so close to your 7mm in performance. The 270 wsm is flatter shooting with roughly similar energy and velocity. The .30-06 is a few hunder fps slower, but still close to the 7mm.

I would stick to the dealers you can talk with face to face when purchasing a firearm.

The reason I was looking at a .270 wsm or 30-06 was to cut down on recoil just a little and because I thought I could save quite a bit of money in buying ammo for a 30-06 vs a 7mm rem mag. The recoil isn't bad on mine but I have a BOSS on it and it seems to cut it down quite a bit cause it's not nearly as bad as my brother-in-laws. But I was just wanting to purchase a new gun and thought I'd try something new.

Id probably look for a short action rifle if I had a 7Mag. That browing micro in 7MM 08 would be my choice. Good news is if you shoot 175's in the 7Mag, and 140's in the 7MM-08, the trajectory is the same. A 280 shooting 150's will be the same as well. A plus in my book.

I personally would opt for the Ruger NO.1. I know it is a single shot, but you can't go wrong there. As far as a bolt action, I would choose something with a Mauser action, like the Remington 798. If you want to stay on the more inexpensive side, the Mossberg A.T.R. is an excellent shooter.

Looking for anyone that has owned a custom Mauser in a magnum caliber. I just purchased one in 7mag, and now I'm hearing that the receivers may not hold up to the magnum loads.

I guess I should of noted that I'll either be giving the 7mm mag to my dad to use or selling it so I don't plan to keep it once I purchase a new one. That's why I was considering something else so close to the 7mm mag in performance.

In that case, its easy.Get the stainless stalker in 30-06. You can get enough load offerings to hunt just about every animal in the world.

First, buy from your local shop where you're a person not a number like at Walmart. Buying online can be done but after shipping costs and transfer fees might as well give the local guy the sale.
I also can't see buying a .270 or .30-06 having a 7mm but if one can justify it, so be it. Myself, I'd go with whichever platform fit ME best. Find the gun that YOU prefer it's feel and hold of first. then decide onthe chambering. If your dealer has one in stock, buy that one. If your reloading, I'd proberly go .30-06 as it has more chocies for bullets.

I would scratch the 270WSM and look at a regular 270 or 30-06 but even with you having a 7mm Mag they really arent much different to be worth switching to me. With the shots your taking on deer a 243 would be great. Very little recoil, short action, and cheaper to shoot. As for the rifle get what YOU like the best. I love my Tikka T3 Lite Stainless but it might not fit you like it dose me so what rifle to get is personal preference.
