I am thinking of buying a Remington 870 16 gaugewingmaster with the Rem. Choke system. Does anyone use this firearm and/or a 16 gauge still?
What are your thougts on the 16gauge as a whole and especially as a hunting shotshell? I know that ammo can be hard to come by at times, but the 16 gauge seems to have a nostalgic touch that I can't seem to get away from.
I have never used a 16, but it seems cool especially if it has the Rem. Choke system.
It's a great gun and "sleeper" of a gauge. And you already guessed it, the shells are few and far between and when you do find them the variety isnt great and the prices are a little high. I have 2 that my father passed down to me and they havent been shot in decades. It's really going to be your choice but you're going to pay the price for nostalga.

My favorite. "Carries like a 20, shoots like a 12". I love em, ammo is everywhere, dont worry. The only problem with that Remington is that its built on the 12 frame. Depending one how much money you want to spend, there are several other favorites....Ithacas are sweet, cant beat a Browning A-5, or an old Remington Model 11. As for new guns Browning has a BPS on a 20 frame that I thinkis probably the best. Go take a look at the "16 Gauge Society" web site. lots of good stuff...
I shoot one! I like it. Got several tree rats with it last year.

I have a 16 gauge Wingmaster, I think it is the best upland bird gun going. Ammo is not too hard to find, wally world even carries it most of the time.
The 16 gauge is an excellent choice for upland game...Shells may cost you a couple more bucks per box than 20 or 12 gauge loads, but they are not exorbitant...What you will usually find in gun stores are 1 ounce laods of # 6 or 7 1/2 shot, which work well for upland game birds, squirrels and rabbits..You can also buy them mail order from places such as Natchez Shooters Supply..
I have two 16 gauge guns, a M 37 Ithaca and a M12 Winchester.. An 870 would serve equally as well as these classics, and probably would be even a little more versatile with it's interchangable choke tubes..
Love my 16 gauge Ithaca. Great gun to carry around long distances. Usually use it for pheasants and grouse. My father has an Ithaca deerslayer in 16 gauge. Plenty potent for deer with a standard slug. Have shot slugs out of my modified barrel, and get acceptable groups at 50 yds, but have too many dedicated slug guns to mess around with bird gun.
