Remington 7400 in .270
I've wanted a .270 for some time now. I have the 742 in the 30-.06, and it is OK, and I understand that all the eventual wear-down problems were resolved when the 7400 was introduced. I've come into a chance to buy a 7400 in the .270, walnut stock, scoped (cheap scope), case, and a Mossberg Plinkster (new) for $450 (two guns for the price). The 7400 looks nice, is the caliber I want, feels OK, a few small scratches on the stock. Alternatively, for the same price, I can get the 700 w/ scope and cammo stock (Wal Mart). The semi automatic reduces recoil (some), but I want to make the better choice. Two guns or one with a great history. One is new (wally-world), the two for one price are at a Pawn shop, but a very trustworthy owner. Any inputs? Otherwise, my cabinet consists of a Marlin 30-30, Mossberg .243, Mossberg 20 g pump, a couple of really old 22LRs, the 742, and the family's M19A3. Bolt action? Semi auto? Decisions, decisions...

What and where are you going to be hunting?
I love the .270 Win. caliber as a whitetail deer gun. It is plenty big enough to knock 'em down. It's real advantage over the 30-06 is the flatness of its trajectory. Accordingly, I don't see much advantage of the .270 Win. in a semi-auto. If you are going to shoot that round, I would want to shoot it out of a bolt-action and mazimize its accuracy.

i have a 7400/.270 and if i didn't inherit that gun i would get rid of it. it doesn't function well all of the time, and it's accuracy is okay, i guess. but, not to my liking. my browning BAR is by far more reliable and more accurate. i would much rather have a 7600 than a 7400. one of these days i may get a 7600 synthetic carbine to use as a rainy day beater gun. and, to have something different. personally i would look at something else. i know some people have good luck with the 7400's, but it seems that i've heard more bad than good.

My first deer rifle wasa 7400 270win. I still have it after 25 years. It has only jammed on me once. When I was young, I didn't know know how to take care of it, and just poured oil in the action. I rarely use it anymore. I just like to use different guns all the time. I have owned a few BARs too. The fit and finish is much better than my 7400. I regret selling some of them.

I've never ownedor even shot one, butfrom everything I've read about them, I would pass on the 7400.
If you are dead set on a semi-auto...save you coins until you can get a Browning BAR. Had one in 30-06 and it was very accurate and never ever had a jam.
I went with the Rem 7600 instead and love it.
