Default 30-06 accuracy?

I have a savage 30-06 that I have been shooting for a while and am interested in shooting longer distances with. How many yards are 30-06 usually good for? I know that the shooter and the scope have a lot to do with this but just looking for a rough estimate. I am looking into getting a 308 because my gun range has 1000yrd lanes and I would like to do this but I don't fell that my hunting rifle would do the job and i don't want to change alot of stuff on my hunting rifle because it has never failed me yet. I would guess 600yrds would probably be the maximum but i am unsure. Any input is greatly appreciated.

A 30-06 has a longer range than a 308win. Generally the range is where the bullet goes below the sound barier around 1100fps depending on humidity and elevation, etc. Also bullet stabiliation comes to play.

The biggest factor for your rifle is your accuracy. If your rifle is accurate up to 1MOA, you can easily try a poke at 1000 yards. I can't say I have. 600 is the longest I have gone.

The '06 will do the job at 1000 yards if you can.

With an accurate 30-06,an adequate scope, and proper loads,a skilled shooter that fully understands wind drift and trajectory, can shoot respectable groups at 1000 yards.I am soon going to be shooting 1000 yards with a factory 308win,as soon as my 700-5r Milspec arrives.

There are a lot more rifles that can can shoot well at 1000 yd., than there are shooters. Concentrate on getting closer. That's whyit's called "hunting" not "sniping".

You might want to go back and reread his post.

At no point does he even mention taking 1000yard shots while hunting. He specifically mentions shooting on the 1000 yard shooting range.
I myself bought a rifle specifically for 1000 yard target shooting, but I have no intention of ever shooting at game animals at 1000 yards.

In 1957 I was shooting 1000 yds at Fort Jackson, SC with M-1 Garand/Peep sights trying to qualify for Sharpshooter.....

For the average Joe Blow like yourself I'm guessing,I wouldn't recommend any more than 300 to 400 yards. And that is after lots of practice at those distances.

once you get a good grasp on ballistics, know how to set a rifle up for it, and buy the right equipment, and the hard part, convincing yourself it "ain't that far" ranges to 1K aren't that hard.
I have yet to shoot at a game animal at 1K, 985 was my farthest attempt and it was a miss, not due to anything other than I got in a hurry. But my lifelong goal is to take a whitetail at 1000 yards or beyond.
jw, I shoot a .264 wildcat based on a 270 win case and this caliber has taken game to 1400 yards. shoot a heavy for caliber high BC bullet and practice, practice, practice, you'll get there.
