Default Red dot VS. Scope

i have a H&R tracker 2 20 ga slug gun, i would say about the max distance is around 150 yards, but i will also have close up and personal shots too. so what would you go with, and why

A 3-9 scope would work well but i feel a 2-7 power scope would be even better for a slug gun. I have a 3-9 on my slug gun because it was what i had laying around. As for a red dot i dont care for them on hunting firearms. They are great on something you will need quick close up shots.

I have 3 Nikon Pro Staff 2x7x32 shotgun scopes, one on my 1187 and the other two are on my muzzleloaders. Then I have a Bushnell 1.5x4x32 on another slug gun. I've thought about a red dot but have read other posts about them not being so good in low light. Something about the dot having a tail or something. I'll stick to my scopes.

Big fan of 2-7x variables on slug guns, or even a 4x. I would second the Prostaff.
I have used red dots on smoothbore slug guns and I would say my personal max for a non magnified red dot would be 50 yards or so. They are bad in low light as well (you can see the deer until you look through the red dot, then you look through the red dot and see nothing but the dot and a black backgroud).

I would go for a compact 2-7 or better yet 1.5-4 or something along those lines.

Variable power for sure in my opinion and I like the 3-9 power, I don't really see why you would want to go any less, 3X will focus across my living room..

Normally for less magnification at the same price point you get a better scope. Not to mention the less the power the better the eye relief, field of view and the brighter it will be. Also as a norm a 1.5-4 or a 2-7 will be more compact and lighter. You simply don't need 9X to hunt deer at most normal ranges.

And a 1.5 power is easier to get on a deer than a three power, and easier yet if you forget and leave your scope set at 9X which is pretty much useless inside of 100 yards.

It really is a personal preference though.
