Default tweaking my 6.5 Gibbs

well for a year I worked with my 6.5 Gibbs, shoots great, and with decent muzzle velocity, but if I got it up and running close to where the smith who built it says it should run (3300 fps) I ruin cases every full power load.
After fireforming and firing 200 pcs. of 270 brass, I had to do something, I took the rifle to a local smith and had the throat lengthened .100", took a fireformed case and loaded 61 gr of re22 behind a 140 gr berger vldseated just kissing the lands. did this 3 times before the primer pocket loosened the shots chront'd 3244, 3255, 3256, 3232 fps. so now I'm outrunning a 264 win mag by 250 fps (according to my manuals) with a 270 win case, and the ungodly BC of the bergers will make it lazer flat, may get to swat a whitetail at 1K with this rifle after all.

A very good friend of mine has a 6.5 gibbs. He uses H1000 and a 142SMK. If I remember he was getting 3030FPS with single digit ES. If you have a custom rig you need to run it through a croney. An aftermarket barrel will usually produce a higher velosity than the manual list. That is a great cartridge. Find a good load and go with it they are known to have terrible throat erosion. Who chambered it for you?

ray romain built the rifle, H1000 has a low ES but the MV's are anemic, I ran mine up to 67 gr. (5 gr over max.) without signs of pressure but the velocity was slow (3100 fps) I know kreigers are cut barrels but my barrel is 29.5" so IMO it should be running faster than that.

Ray chambered a few for me as well. He also chambered the 6.5 I mentioned. He puts together some very accurate rifles.

gunner, I have a problem with this statement, there is no way it can have worse throat erosion than say a 264 win mag, I personaly know a guy who had ray build a 6.5 gibbs and his first barrel lasted 2500 rounds, thats a lifetime of big game hunting. My other Long Range rig has a case capacity of 122 gr of H2o, and I plan on getting 1000 rounds through it before setback or rebarreling. my load is 110 gr of WC872 that computes to shooting almost 16 pounds of powder before the throat will be gone.

You wont see anyone shooting more than 1200 rounds out a 6.5-284 before re-barreling it and shooting competitive. 6.5 Gibbs is in the same ballpark. Hunting Gun, Different Story. Get a Hawkeye borescope and you make the decision.

Default RE: tweaking my 6.5 Gibbs

Been looking at some 12-15 year old loadingnotes for my 6.5 Gibbs.

The only load using aR-22/140 SMK with Remington brass I have shows I was getting 3010 fpswith 52.0 grs of R-22 yielding an SD of 11.8 and a MAD of 9.7 .

Switching to IMR-7828, 140 gr SMK and formed Remington brass and a 215 Federal primer.56.0 grs yielded 3135 fps with a SD of 11.4, using 56.5 grs it pushed the SMK to an average of 3160 fps with an SD of 15 and with a charge of 57.0 grains the velocity was 3186 fps and an SD of 9.6.

I have to find my issue of Handloader to look at their reccomendations for the 6.5 Gibbs but my loads are under the maxes listed but the velocities are up there. There is no way my rifle could withstand a diet of RR's loads. My rifle is a Bill Wiseman M700 and wears a very fast 31 1/2 inch Hart barrel. I havent shot it it many years but I probably shot more 120 Barnes X's and 107 gr SMK more than the 140's. It's a bit heavy and bulky to tote around in my aging years.
