Default Rem. 700 XCR and Leupold scope base problem

I just got a Remington 700 XCR and chose to use the Leupold 2 piece base & rings. When I went to install the bases today, it appears as if the forward mount screw at the front is too long for the drilled & tapped hole. Has anyone else had this problem or know of a fix?

Swap the 4 screws around until you get proper bolt clearance. If the longer set of screws is still interfering with the bolt then return them.(you probably already tried this)

I had a gunsmith at our local Gander Mountain install Leopold mounts on my Rem 700 XCR. He installed them in about 5 minutes while talking to me at the same time. He actuallytalked me into using Leopold mounts and they ended upworking out really nice.

Look at the screws, they aren't all the same length.

ditto on everybody elses comment. Same thing happened on my SPS SS in 30.06. I checked the lengths of the screws and they were different. Corrected the scrfew placements and everything worked out great! Good luck and Good Shooting!

The package came with 2 long screws and 2 shorter ones. The long ones work fine on the rear base and the bolt functions well. The short one in the rear of the forward base works fine. It is just the front forward screww that does not go all the way in. It is hitting the bottom of the drilled hole.

put the 4 screws in the bases and then lift the bases up and look at the protruding screw length. Move screws around until all are the same.

Yep, the screws are in the wrong holes. They will all fit you just need to move them around.

Yes, I tried all screws in different holes. Yesterday afternoon, I went to see my local gunsmith who told me the same thing everyone else on this forum said about how I must have the wrong screws in the wrong holes. I took him the gun, bases and screws and he said I was right, the hole on the forward base was not drilled deep enough and he had never seen that before on a remington rifle. He gave me a shorter screw that worked perfectly. Problem solved.
