What is a good youth model .270

Looking for suggestions here.I am looking to buy my son a youth model .270 brand doesn't really matter. I would prefer it be a bolt action and synthetic because price is a concern for me right now. He will only be using it deer hunting. He is 12 years old but still has trouble with a regular size rifle. I don't want a single shot. Help me out folks.

Try these:

Not .270, but a great cartridge, nonetheless: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/16197

Not .270, but a great price!: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/97518

Not .270, but might fit him really well: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/99541

Just what you asked for: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/26405

The key will be to get him to a place that actually has some of the models for him to actually pick up & shoulder for himself. Even if it's not in .270, he can get a good idea of the handling from any long-action cartridge: .30-'06, .25-'06, .280, etc. If the gun doesn't fit him right, it really won't matter how much money you save.

Also, you can check the classified sections of this & other websites. Try a WTB post: "wanted to buy". You might be surprised at how accomodating folks become when the matter concerns bringing a young hunter into the fold!

Good Luck,

FC

We're it me I'd go .243 or 7-08 in a 700 youth SPS.....

All the smack a kid will ever need for deer, in an easier to use short action rifle, with a LOT less recoil.

If your 12 year old is sized where an adult stock is stillhard to handle, then I'd be concerned over recoil issues.

Do your kid a favor and don't thump him wth a .270 until he is bigger............

X2 for me. And I wouldn't shy away from a single shot either. Chances are he won't get another round off in time anyway. I have never had to shoot an animal twice. And the people I have seen take more than one shot never hit what they were aiming at anyway, they were just slinging lead towards the animal.

Single shots are actually a bit safer and teach you shoot better because you know you have to make the first shot count. And when you are practicing it slows down your shot sequence.

Only my opinion though.

Last year I bought my son a 700 youth sps in 7-08 and he loves it and it shoots great. It came with a limb saver pad and I think that makes a big difference.

Since when does a bolt action not function as a single shot when so loaded, or so operated?

Chances are you are making unfounded assumptions about a kid you never met, having a back up round is never not a good idea when learning a kid how to hunt......

Talk to ANY big game guide and they are going to be looking for you to chamber a second round immediately....just in case.

Never had a problem making each shot count despite having more in the magazine, nor teaching my kid the same.

The man said he didn't want a singleshot, and I'm bettin' there's a good enough reason......

All semi-autos, bolt actions, pumps, and single shots, are single shot guns until you load a second round and pull the trigger.

Holy crap you like to argue. I never said it couldn't be shot as a single shot. I was just stating not to count a single shot out because the advantage of having a repeater usually isn't as big of an advantage as most think it is. I don't have any trouble killing stuff with a muzzle loader, you either hit it or you don't. They normally don't hang around long enough for you to rack another round, aim and fire off a good shot. Especially if your small and it takes you longer to recover from the shot because of recoil.

And I don't recall telling him he had to get a single either, if he doesn't want one he doesn't have to get one. Won't hurt him to look at them though will it?

If that's not your opinion that's fine don't try to make me look like a dumb ass because mine is different. And I normally teach someone to shoot or hunt, not learn them.

I actually agree with you and you still find fault with what I say, go figure.

To my knowledge no one makes a youth rifle chambered for the.270.

Most youth rifles are chambered in .223, .243, and 7mm-08.

Remington model seven would be at the top of my list.

Statin' fact isn't arguing for the sake of argument.......

Mr. steve25 plainly typed, and in english....."I don't want a single shot."

Much to that if you take the notion to suggest one, despite.

Assuming everyone asking for help is a "dumbass" to be shown the light, as you tend to do, is telling........

Please continue your argument that having a back up shot is an improper thing for a kid to have, and learn.

Fact is, I come from the school where I was given ONE cartridge, and I'd besthave came home with a critter, or that same live cartridge....them sort of things do teach Riflery.

In retrospect though, the common sense of that, is nill........
