Default Ruger M77 Hawkeye opinions.....

Took a look at this rifle at Gander Mountain tonight.
Just wondering if anyone has one and what you think about the changes they have made from the M77 Mark II
(new trigger, new finish on metal, ect.)

Thanks

I like the new Hawkeyes a lot. The new trigger is definately an improvement although some folks may still opt for a Timney (or similar) replacement. These are real workhorse type rifles...IMO.

They seem like a good value with the scope rings included in the price.

IMHO, they could have done a better job with the finish..it is not very durable and marks up easily. The trigger is a vast improvement over the previous trigger. These sell in the 550 range...a few months ago found a few MK II's in the low 400's for sale. You could bead blast one correctly and put in a timney and probably come in close to the price of a Hawkeye.

I can not give an opinion on the rifle because I have never handled or shot one. I posted because of the price. I just got a Cabela's flyer(Wheeling, WV) in the mail, the Hawkeye's were priced for $569. Is that a good price?? Tom.

I bought 2 Hawkeyes this past spring, the new 338 Ruger Compressed Magnum and a African in 375. The newer ones in Compressed mag have only a 20" barrel, they are really nice, well balanced, quick to shoulder and acquiresight picture(both with & without a scope). If you're wanting to invest for a special hunt, find one that fits, feels good, andis well balanced for you, then go to the prices and work it out from there.

Didn't care for the finish myself ,the new trigger was an improvment but it has never been a problem fixing the old one. I'll stick with the Mark II"s myself .
