Default Semiautomatic Rifles

I anticipate purchasing a semi auto rifle, preferably with a military style but not necessarily. I am looking at ranges of 300 yard plus for varminting and perhaps deer, if that is feasible. I am looking also at something that would be compact and would accept a scope. I probably have not narrowed things down too much but would like suggestions. I am not concerned about the price. I need accuracy and range as the primary criteria. Thank you in advance.

Ar-10 Carbine or M1-A Scout/Squad Rifle come to mind for a military type rifle that could come close to doing all that. I think the AR-10 also comes in .243-Win.,.

an L1A1 will do the job....also called an FAL...most are chambered in 308..and most of the ones i shot were pretty accurate...rapid fire at 50yds is nothing to hold them all on a paper plate...never really grouped one..but my dad did and he was really impressed...i will group mine this spring to see....i dont have a scope on mine....just the factory peeps...you can buy them new and ive seen some really nice new ones...DSA is a good maker i think...other than that all i know to tell you is look whereever you can find military type rifles...or assult rifles...or an AR-10 yould work....i know they come in a few calibers...

Ar-10 or AR-15 would be the most common answer here, but I' m going to recommend either a M-14 (M-1A) or M-1 Garand. I' ve hunted both, and LOVED both, the Garand getting my favorite vote. The M-14 is a lot nicer to carry, since it' s a lot lighter and much shorter, but I' m a .30-06 far through and through, and I found the extra weight to actually be helpful when taking offhand shots. For your ranges, either would be great at it (.308 or .30-06 basically) but the M-1Garand would probably be noticeably better.

Varminting at 300 yds. requires a very accurate firearm. There are Semiautos today that are a lot more accurate than they were in the passed but I don' t know of any that are 300 yd. varmint accurate. Browning and Remington make semiauto hunting rifles.

Guys need to research semi' s before making the posts about inaccuracy, AR' s have more or less swept the high power events in the last couple years. My RRA varminter will shoot better than 98% of the factory varmint rifles and I have taken woodchucks beyond 500 yds with it. For smallish deer an AR15 will suffice with the proper ammo, not the best, marginal maybe but definately adequate. There are 3 factory loads for the 223 specificly designed for deer hunting. Les Baer builds his ultimate varminter AR with an accuracy guarrantee of .25" for around 1600.00, thats a better guarrantee then you' ll get for that money in a custom bolt gun!

Natty:

The only thing about buying a .22 cal. is it may not be legal to hunt deer with it in your state. Good luck.

i will second ridgerunner.....i read an article in shotgun news last month or the month before......all aobut diffrent ar-15 2 pages on accurazing one...the company ridge runner talked about is in there and shotgun news field tested it and got groups of .29 i believe....check them out before you insist they wont do it...if you put a good high power scope on a well built AR not even a accurized one i bet it will hang with factory bolt guns....most people dont treat semis like bolt guns and just spray lead and have fun with them......i used to do that until i seen what they do.....many are more accurate than given credit....
