I have a ruger 22 Hornet and it doesn't shoot very consistent. I think the barrel is bad however it is not very old. What would it cost to get the barrel redone. Or what do you think could be wrong. I have a leupold 3X9 on it so the scope should not be the problem. It should be a shooter at 200 yards and it is not. I can't take all the blame when I use a steel bench at the shooting range. Does anyone have any advise for me?? e-mail me at cmacwrobinson@yahoo.com
Thanks Clay
What types of ammo have you tried? What are some of the other details about the gun and how its shooting? Do you handload or use factory? Are all the screws on the scope tight?
It may not need a new barrel it might just prefer a different ammo brand, weight, need a floated barrel, etc. The list goes on and on.
Ruger77.270 stole my advice. Unfortunately the 22 Hornet does not have all that many factory options from which to chose. But I'd try as many as I can get my hands on. If you have a buddy that is a good hand loader, try that route. If you cannot get a good group via custom loading, the problem is elsewhere. Another idea ... have you had a trigger job done? A great trigger will help a ton.
My cousin has that same rifle. He handloads, and found after he bedded/free floated the barrel, and had the trigger worked to 2lbs, it shoots MUCH better now.

When a rifle such as yours fails to shoot well, and you have tried all the various & sundry load combinations to no avail, the problem is MOST OFTEN bad stock bedding, not a bad barrel. Try rebedding the receiver & barrel. Use a good glass bedding product like Brownell's Acraglas Gel. Try it with thebarrel fully bedded, and then with some upward pressure near the forend tip, if full bedding doesn't correct the problem. Finally, you can try with the barrel fully floating, if necessary.
The .22 Hornet is NOT the easiest round in the world to get accurate ammo for. As a matter of fact, I have only gotten good accuracy from the Hornet with handloads. The last box of factory ammo I shot in mine (Remington) was JUST BLOODY AWFUL!!A GI .45 shoots better than that stuff did.

Try HSM ammo from cabela's, its has Calhoon bullets in either 37gr, 42gr and its reviews are very good. Also check out JamesCalhoon .com its for the 22hornet, 19hornet, and 19badger shooters with Ruger 77/22 and CZ527's.
Is your gun a Ruger #1 or a bolt action? It is very unlikely that the barrel is bad. One of my .22 Hornet barrels has over 12,000 rounds through it and it is still very accurate.Check the scope mount and rings.
The .22 Hornet and K-Hornet are among my favorite calibers and I have reloaded them for 45 years. The .22 Hornet is hard to re-load for. Over the years I have developeda couple of proven loads for each of my .22 Hornet guns.Factory .22 Hornet ammo is getting much sloppier and much more expensive.
I haven't been back here for awhile, but I sure do appreciate all your help. I will try all your suggestions and hope the problem will be solved. thanks again

Clay
I had 2 different 22 Hornets in the Ruger bolt action rifles. Both rifles were disappointing in the accuracy department. I got rid of both of them.
The hornet can be a finicky round. However my Model 82 Kimber will shoot extremely well.
You should not have to spend a lot of extra time, money, and effort when you have already spent good money for the rifle. Get rid of the Ruger, and if you still want a Hornet then look at a Browning, CZ, and even the older Savage Hornets, theyshoot extremely well. Tom.

We need to stop using these terms today, "Sniper Rifle", "Tactical", "Assault Weapon".
The Hornet has a reputation, deserved or not,of being picky about ammo that gives good accuracy. It also depends on what you consider acceptable accuracy, everyone's opinion is different.
I would try EVERYTHING, different ammo including various handloads, base and ring screws, scope, bedding, etc.. before I would re-barrel a new rifle.
