Default long range AR barrel length

I'm looking at a target AR. I'm leaning towards a 1-8" twist but undesided on a 20" or a 24" barrel.
i'm thinking between the bushmaster predator or a rock river varmiter.

I don't know what your budget is but you should take a good hard look at Sabre defence. They cost a little more than a RR or BM but the quality and fitting of all the parts is top notch. And unlike most other AR assemblers they make nearly every part on their AR's including their barrels.

I'm a fan of rock river, I have the entry tactical and the varmit a4 20'', I like the 20'' simply b/c its a little easier to maneuver with and saves you a little weight. It shoots like a dream.

I'm pretty sure that the Varminter is an excellent gun, but where I'm from, a 2.221" group at 300 yards is VERY acceptable. Thats why I got the Bushmaster V Match. Not too much cheaper *than the Varminter*, but I could use that extra 150 dollars to buy a St. Croix rod. Also, if I ever just want to mount open sights and go shooting, it comes with a 30 round clip. As for the barrel length, the 24" will give you more accuracy, and in the V Match models it weighs less *than the 20" model.*

I havea RRA w/ a 24 inch ss bull barrel, varmint. Shoots 2 inch groups, and less, at 300 yards all day long.

That being said, I think an 18 or 20 inch barrel is my next upper purchase. Just because the barrel is longer does not make it more accurate. It does add some fps out the muzzle though. That may keep the bullet ss out a bit further which gives it better accuracy further out, past 600 yards or further, for a long barrel. But a quality 18 inch barrel should shoot every bit as good as a 24 inch barrel at 300 yards.

I really like my upper with the 24 inches, but it is a bit unwieldy. Just a thought.

I have the 24" RRA Varminter and assaid it's a bit heavy in the field but shoots great . I happened to find a used RRA upper with a 16" bull barrel stainless which I use more than I do the 24" .
