I have shot quite a few rifles made by Bushmaster and I own a S&W AR15. I think both companies make a good rifle and either would suit you well. I would honestly say to go for which ever one you can get the best deal on.

Does S&W even make a bull barrel varmint model?

I have a S&W MP15T on order . I had a chance to test 2 variations of them ,was impressed with the quality of them and they are very similar to Stag . Overall a great product .
Bushmasters AR's are great guns in their own right as well . Hate to state this but , I've heard some negative comments on Olympic Arms .

Just do plenty of research and continue gettin input from others . The world of AR's can be a confusing one.

Good , still waitin for mine .

With everything else being equal, which company has stood behind gun owners in the past and which one caved to and anti-gun administration's point of view. We could very well be seeing a political climate far worse than it was in 1993 by this time next year- which company is going to continue to produce guns if possible for the people, and which company is more likely to cut and run?

The incident you are reffering to took place when the company was under European ownership. With the new owners in place S&W has been working hard to establish themselves once more as one of the U.S.'s premier firearms manufacturer. If you want to base your argument on history, who has been making firearms longer? Both are good companies, both have had their problems. Bushmaster experienced some problems through the last few years when they were concentrating more on cranking out as many rifles as possible as opposed to paying attention to quality control. Check out www.ar15.com for all of the info you will ever need on Ar's. Like many other sites, you will have to sort through all the bull, but there is a wealth of info there.

True, but the new ownership hasn't changed any of the policies that were put in place by the previous owners.
