Default 835 with slugs

I've been told that shooting slugsin an835( smooth bore)isn't safe? Is it due to it being overbored? A guy I hunt with uses this very setup and has for years, he's never had any issues to my knowledge. Any truth to this?

You can shoot slugs out of an 835you just have to get yourself a slug barrel that isn't over bored. Other wise the slug will just rattle down the barrel. I doubt that it would hurt the barrel butI alsoseriously doubt you would be able to hit a barn wall if you were standing inside the barn.

Default RE: 835 with slugs

I own a 835 for many years. The barrels for the 835 are overboard and using slugs can cause problems. I agree with bigbulls, get yourself a rifled slug barrel from Mossberg, but FYI don't use 2-3/4" slugs, use either 3" or 3.5" slugs

Here is some vital information for anyone who hunts with a shotgun with a 3.5" chamber while using slugs. This information comes from Lightfield Slugs, Inc.

Q: Why can't I shoot 2-3/4" slugs through my 3-1/2" chambered slug gun?

A: Firing a 2-3/4" slug in a 3-1/2" chamber is not recommended because of the length of the jump the slug makes between the end of a 2-3/4" case and the front end of a 3-1/2" chamber. This can cause misalignment of the sabot on the slug, thus causing a serious pressure problem as well as poor accuracy. Slugs are NOT LIKE SHOT SHELLS where a shorter shell can be safely fired in a longer chamber with no ill effects. The bottom line is you should use a shell with a minimum case length of 3" (ideally 3-1/2") in any 3-1/2" chambered rifled barrel for best accuracy. THE CASE LENGTH SHOULD MATCH THE CHAMBER LENGTH WHEN IT COMES TO SLUGS.
