If you're reloading, it is up to you. The wsm probably has a little better specs, but the .308 is less punishing, and better all around, IMO .... others may feel different, so it is your pick.
There is a significant difference in the two rounds. The WSM is an 80 grain case vs 56 for the 308. I think it is the best 7mm out there when you consider its performance is on par with the 7mm Weatherby mag and it can be chambered for a Shorter action.
The problem with the 7WSM is it was released last and is not catching on. This may be good for you, I understand these guns are sitting in inventory and are not moving, you may have a chance to buy it right. You can load these downand still be above 308 ballistics and the brass will hold up really well also. The WSM would be my choice due the fact you are reloading. The 308 does have the advantage of being offered in some extremely light rifles if that is critical.
.308 , I'm not buying any cartridge that is doomed....
if you want a WSM, the .300 WSM is a clear winner, the .270wsm and .325wsm may succeed, the 7mmWSM last I heard/read was dead.
Even if you reload, I say why bother with a dead cartridge, not that I plan to resell any firearm I buy, but if you did....could be a real problem to unload down the road....

Why do I bother replying to your posts. Have you ever owned a 7 WSM and or actually shot one ? Probably not
I have owned many 308's in every variation and 1 7 WSM itis a night/day comparison. The 7wsm is a super cartridge.

I've seen way more .270 wsm and .300 wsm than 7mm wsm, even more .325wsm than 7mm WSM. Not referring to 7mm SAUM.
In a recent gun article, take their opinions as you will, but they listed the 7mm WSM as a "bad bet" to succeed. Have things changed drastically over the past few months or so? Be honest for every .300 wsm or .325, or .270wsm talk you hear about, how often does the 7mm WSM come up? has to be 10 to 1.
Never said it was a bad cartridge.....just very unlikely IMO(and other's)to succeed. Again, never said it was a bad round/inaccurate, just dying...
If it were between any WSM and a .308, I'd take another WSM version.....though if it were between the 7mm-08 and a WSM that would be a much tougher call in my book.
Who cares if it "succeeds" anyways? Just buy a couple bags of brass now and your good to go. It's a 7RM in a short action=light gun...sounds good to me. Granted both would work fine and the .308 would be more efficient, but who gives a rats azz about efficiency? 7WSM would be my pick!
