Default Do you tap your scope to settle in the crosshairs?

I had some trouble sighting in my 17 hmr and was wondering if any of you have to tap your scope to settle the crosshairs in after making an adjustment?

Never heard of doing that. What kind of scope and mounts are you using? Professionally installed or DIY?

DIY installed cheapo scope. If I adjust the scope, then shoot, bullets wander all over the place for a while. If I adjust, then bump the butt of the gun on the ground, the bullets stop wandering.

Check out this link:

Repeatability
Good quality scopes are repeatable. That is, if you adjust your windage and elevation dials for point of impact at one setting, then move them around and shoot in different places, often in a square grid, then back to the original place, the point of impact will be the same as it was when you started.
Good quality scopes will also move the point of impact when you adjust your dials, without having to "settle in." That is to say, if you move your elevation dial up three inches, your point of impact should immediately reflect that. Sadly to say, more often than not, lesser quality scopes won"t do this without shooting a few times first, to "settle in" the scope"s internal adjustments. Some people "tap" on their scope with a coin or cartridge case to help this process.

I am not saying this will work but next time try going past your intended setting by 1 full moa then backing down to where you want the POI to be. Takes the tension off the spring - "settle in".

IE: using 1 click = 1/4" at 100 scope
@100 yards you want to raise your POI by 1"- go up or down 8 clicks then back 4 clicks
@ 50 Yards " " " "......................" " - go up 16 clicks then back 8 clicks

I have been watching shooter's tap their scope with their wallets for many many years(30 or more). Normally a friction mount scope will require settling of the cross hairs. The crosshairs can and sometimes do move. This is one of the major differences in the quality of a scope. Tom.

I do the same as Skeeter when I am adjusting anything with a screw tension.
