Default Mounted a scope today . . . weird problem?

Mounted a Bushnell Sportview on a new .243 for my son today, and when we went to bore sight it (laser), we had to bottom out the top adjustment and the laser dot was still way high at 100 yds.
So we took the scope off, put a couple pieces of electrical tape for a shim in the front mount, and got close anyway. Shootable anyway.
What could have happened?
Had no problems with the scope on the previous gun.
Brand new Savage model 10.
How do you fix it properly?

Don't now why you have this problem.... but you need something else in place of the electrical tape. The tape is ok to find out about how much you need to shim, but it will not continue to give you consistent results.......you need a shim material that won't compress.

Sounds like you might have the rings reversed .

The way you described it ("bottom out the top adjustment") I assume you mean the scope's elevation knob was adjusted DOWN as far as it will go, but the rifle still shoots too high?? If so, this is a MOUNT problem, NOT a scope problem! The rear ring is too low. You need a ring in the rear that will permit the scope to point lower on the target. Or, you can put a shim in the bottom half of the rear ring until the scope points further down on the target. (This is a very common problem these days, it seems)

IFwhat I described is just the opposite of what you're experiencing, then you need a shim in the FRONT ring under the scope tube. I cut my shims from beer cans with a pair of scissors. Use however many thicknesses you need to get a little latitude in the elevation adjustment so yoiu can accommodate various loads & bullet weights.....

As the fellows above mentioned, this may be solved by such a simple measure as swapping the front & rear rings-depending on what kind of mount you have, of course....

I measured the height of the scope from the action, and it was the same . . . "parallell. But that's my first thought, the front of the scope is pointing down!
Beer cans??!! Damn it! We onlydrink out ofbottles!!
Yeah the tape was kind of a temporary fix to see if it corrected the problem. I'll look it over again more closely (no beers) and see if maybe they put the mounts on wrong at the factory. I doubt it because Savage package guns are bore sighted at the factory and we already put 20 or so rounds through it and it shot very well! But that was withthe scope that came with the gun.
That's the weird part. What would be different?

try another set of rings, if the rings aren't the culprit then its either the base or machining of the reciever, the best way to fix this is a set of ryger signature rings with offset inserts, use the plus .010 inserts on the back ring, -010 inserts on the front ring, center up the adjustments using a mirror and start over, shimming rings binds the tube, and can lead to other problems.

I have a buddy that has a Savage model 12 in 223, only his problem was, couldn't get it even close to paper it shot way way way low. I think it was almost 3ft low at 100 yards when the vertical adjustment was maxed out. He mounted up some cheap illuminated reticel scope, and had to mount it way high off the bore so the bolt would clear the scope. I messed with it a lil bit, and told him to get a different set of bases/rings and try that, or just ditch that scope and go with something different. Never heard back if he did anything yet, this was a few weeks back.
