I bought my son a .243 H&R SB2 Ultra. It came with a cheapo scope and I need to replace it. I've been looking at a Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14SFX40 and also a Leupold VX II 3-9X40. These are inmy comfortprice range.
What are your thoughts on these two OR other recommendations. Please explain.

For such a handy little rig I'd personally want a trim scope as well. Doesn't have to be tiny, just in proportion with the firearm.
What about soemthing in a 2-7 that leans towards the compact side of things. Or a 3-9 on the trim side.
I have a Nikon Monarch 3x9x40 on both my 7 mm mag. and my .270. Very sharp images and have never given me a difficulty in the cold weather climate that I hunt.
Source a VX-1 3X9for $220ish, or less for a use one, send it to the Custom Shop for turrets installed, and reap thefull potential of the .243........
It's all he'll ever need for a long time, except maybe a good rifle.
Target turret's on a friction adjustment scope??
There are a lot of decent scopes out there for a decent price. Please do not get caught up in the hype of a name. Leupold makes a decent scope, but they are overpriced for what they offer.
The VXI is a simple scope that has acceptable quality, but it is over priced. The warranty is good, but that is where it stops. I also believe they are imported, not American made?? That is not to say that imported scopes ard bad, it is just pointing out a fact.
The Nikon's are also OK for the money, but you are also paying for a name there. If you can find one of the Monarch's they just closed out-then buy it. It would be the best for the money you can buy-if you can find one.
The Bushnell Elite series of scopes are great scopes for the money. For the money they are probably the best of the three I have spoke of so far. The 3200 Elite would be a good quality scope for a decent price. Take a good look at them before you buy a scope. They have a lot of good features. Tom.

Check out ebay I have noticed for the opast few weeks selling 3x9x40's Bushy Elite 4200's for "buy it now" as low as 230.00. Damn fine scope, optically better then Nikon Monarch, VXIII and very close to the zeiss conquest. I have all of these scopes, I love the conquest but the 4200 isa no brainer forreturn on investment.

Have always sent off a friction adjustment scope to the Custom Shop and recieved back click adjustment turretsin the upgrade.
You should know facts before trying to talk them.
The difference betwixt a VX 1 and a VX 11 is simply the lens coating and a hundred bucks, for the most part.
I can dig a Lifetime Warranty that allows me to buy a used scope, send it to the factory, and have it inspected, and repaired if requiredat no charge to me, no questions asked, none required.......
Boughta 3200 once, on a bet, and discovered mill shavings floating around inside the tube after a dozen or so shots.....
I shot it, at 200 yards with a 168 Hornady Match...clean thru the middle of the errector set.
Woulda sold it to some sucker, to recoup some funding,but couldn't live with doing that to someone..............
Off course you could have sent it back to bushnell for repair or most likely replacement. Then when you got thatPee poor scope back sold it to some guy who would have been able to use the lifetime warranty and likely loved it. Then you could have some money to buy another VXI. FWIW to question anothers knowledgeof quality glass meanwhile your spouting off about a VXI or just another coating, etc is a touch ironic to me... Thanks forthe chuckle.
Have a good one and the next time you have a scope thats not a leupold before shooting it maybe try selling it (most these days come with Transferrable warranties ...yes the same as Gold rings themselves) .
