So if I get my lightweight setup in .243 Win mainly for antelope, which may be used on varmints and/or mule deer, which scope would you prefer I'm down to 2....both leupold vx-III's
3.5-10x40mm in B&C reticle
4.5-14x40mm in B&C reticle
4.5-14x40mm LR B&C reticle w/ side focus
The LR model has a 30mm tube, which I really don't think I'd need but it has a side focus, the other don't have a adj objective or side focus, no focus....
I like the 14x for those long shots.....over the 10x, but the 3.5-10 should be lighter, but the gun would already be plenty light, so a few ounces shouldn't matter to me. Leaning towards one of the 4.5-14 since it's antelope country.
A 500 yard shot at 10 times magnification visually brings that animal to about 50 yards. I wouldn't sacrafice the lower magnification to gain the higher magnification. 10 power magnification is more than enough for any big game hunting.

That 4.5X14 is a dandy. I personally can not tell the difference between 3.5 and 4.5, but I can tell the difference between 10X and 14X. I would go with the 4.5X14-Oh ya, I did. I have two of them. The B&C reticle is great. But if you are going to do some varminting, then I would look at the VH reticle instead of the B&C.I have one on my Knight LRH(B&C reticle),and it is the berries for a BP scope. Tom.

good point, I think really if I got more into varmint with my .243 I may even buy another scope with the varmint reticle, I plan to shoot 90-100gr bullets out of it, so for varmitns not sure what Id shoot, 55-75? 85? If the 55 shot well Id want that and then the varmint reticle I think. Then I was thinking maybe a quick release set up so I can interchange scopes /buellts for varmint/antelope. but then I wonder about accuracy? of a quick relase setup.
I put a 4-16x50 with adjustable objective and mildots on my .243, but my main goal is varmints and maybe deer hunting. We can't use centerfires for deer where I live in Michigan.
If my main goal was bigger game at distances around 200 yards I would look at something with less power, like 10 or 12 power and no parallax adjustment. This would be suitable for that and some varmint hunting on the side.
If I were thinking medium to large game I wouldn't even look at anything that big. Maybe a decent 3-9 because they are popular and usually cheaper, but ultimately I would look for a more compact 2-7 or something.
My reasoning is lower powered optics almost always look better and at less cost usually. For the money you would spend on a Luepold varmint scope you could get a top of the line 2-7 hunting scope.

+2 forthe Conquest. I like the RapidZ reticle.I haven't been very happy with my VXIII optically it is just ok IMO. I'd take a bushnell elite 4200 or Conquest over the new leupolds...[]
