Default Who can tell me about the .358 Winchester ?

What can youtell me about this caliber? I see that it is available in the Ruger M77 Hawkeye. Is this a .308 Win that has been necked up to a .35 caliber bullet? How does this round compare balistically to the 350 Remington Mag? Who makes factory ammo for it? thanks, Bricat

If I recall, Winchester loads one silver box 200 grain offering. I actually glanced at a ballistics chart for one earlier today but hell if I can remember what it said. I think it was something in the 2000 fps range at the muzzle... but I could be way off... it was a long day.

308 WINCHESTER necked up to 358. CUrrent ammunition is magnum priced because winchester only makes it once a year(story I got) it will hit a deer like a hammer. 2400-2500 fps range with most hunting bullets . It is about 100 fps slower then a 350 remington.

The bigger case of the 350 mag. really comes into play when you go to 250 grain or heavier bullets, that are neededfor deep penetration in the biggest animials.

With the 180 and 200 grain bullets, the 350 is about 150 fps faster... but with 250's on up, it increases to200 fps faster... The added bullet weight, and the added velocity, makesthe 350 mag, quite a bit more cartridgeon the biggest animials.

For deer or blk. bear the 200 grain bullets work just fine...

Yes, the .358 is a .308 Win. necked up to shoot .358" bullets. It is a very accurate and powerful cartridge, being able to shoot 250-grain bullets at over 2400 FPS MV. It is not quite as powerful as the .350 R. Mag., or the .35 Whelen, both of which are essentially a necked-up .30/.'06 cartridge, as far as case capacities go. In addition to the .358 Win., today there's the .338 Federal, a .308 expanded to shoot .338 bullets. This is also an excellent cartridge, as is the slightly longer .338/'06.

The .358 is a excellent cartridge for ANYTHING in north america within 200 yards. Just visualize a short .35 whelen. In fact,I cannot even see why they introduced the .338 federal as it won't do a thing that the .358 won't-especially if you reload!

In my original post I put up 2400fps... and went back and edited it to 2000fps.... I thought 2400 was too fast for a heavier bullet out of that case.... guess I should give my memory a little more credit!

What new can I add? The 200gr silver tip winchester loads hit 2480fps from my 20.5 inch barrel. Conley Precission loads the 358win as well. Hornady and Remingtons 200gr pointed bullets work great on deer. I load them to 2488fps and thats two grains under listed max. The 225gr partition is a great one load fits all. I have not hunted with it but get 2430fps with it. So far H4895 work for both weight bullets and burns quick no muzzle flash with my 20.5 " barrel.

The only thing I think you guy's missed was the type of rifle and bullet casting. The 358 is a fantasitic lever action round, and is considered by many to be the minumum in Big Bore Hunting. It is also a fantastic round for bullet caster's. The 35 performs very well with cast bullets. And 35 caliber bullet's are very easy to cast. It is where bullet weight(200 grain or slightly larger) meets maximum cast velocity(within reason). Without substantial recoil. This cartridge really shines in the cast bullet world. It is a true favorite there.

I have an Encore pisto barrel in 358 Winchester. I will admit it is a handful with a cast 200 grain pill. But it is a deer dropper.

I do disagree with the above comment of it only being a 200 yard cartridge. This fallacy came about because most 358's are in open sighted lever actions, so people assume a 200 yard limit. Do a little research and you will see that the cartridge has far longer range than 200 yards. Tom.
