What rifles do you have already? What will you use it for and at what ranges? How often and how much will you shoot?

What is your intended quarry? I have owned both a 270 WSM and 300 Wsm. They are both excellent rounds. I loved the 270 WSM. My boy talked me into letting him work it off so now he owns it. He has taken whitetail and antelope with it. I wouldn't hesitate to say that it would take anything up to and including moose.

The 300 WSM was awesome as well but didn't flip up my skirt like the 270. The 7mm WSM is less popular but I would bet that its an excellent round nonetheless.

The 325 doesn't do much for me on paper I would suggest the 338 win mag instead for the larger categorie. Of course the 300 win is a tried and true campaigner. I don't think you would go wrong with any of them.

300 win mag would be my choice, never been a fan of the wsm. I would definately stay far away from the 7wsm, its days are getting short. (Unless you reload and find a very good rifle for dirt cheap)

Given the similarities in ballistics between the 300 WSM and the 300 Win Mag... and the noticeably lighter weight of the 300 WSM due to the shorter action, my choice between those two is definitely the 300 WSM... especially for a mountain rifle where weight is an important factor.

Ox, Not sure of your experience or collection of firearms, so don't be insulted. But "magnum" does not kill any deader than a standard cartridge. The bullet coming out of a short mag is the same as a standard cartridge (308, 30-06, 300 winmag, 300wsm). Same projectile, different brass and powder. The recoil will be tolerable, but definately there. Unless you are shooting elk at over 300 yds, there is no real advantage with the wsm's. Consider this, ammo is around $40 a box for wsm. 270, 30-06 will be $13-20 a box. 270 and 30-06 can be found at about every wal-mart, k-mart, bait shop, etc. not so with the wsm's.

I would suggest not trying to man handle the 300WSM. I have a savage 300WSM and first day out shooting i tried to manhandle the gun and it kicked back and the scope got me right between the eyes and after that i learned real quick that its a gunthat you have to relax with.

ox, out of those I would take the 270 WSM.. I found that it does not kick to bad.. But the other are definitly gonna have more recoil.. You have listed a 27 Caliber (270 WSM) a 28 Caliber (7mm WSM) 2 30 Caliber and 1 32 Caliber cartride in your mix. The Magnumns are not necessary for the game that your seeking and many of the more traditional rounds in the same caliber would do the job just fine with less recoil.. For example, The 270, the 7mm08 and the 308..

I have both and would say they will both get your attention when pulling the trigger using good loads but there is a difference in recoil between the two being the 270 WSM has less like it should...

Then, I'd choose either one of the 300's with a good aftermarket recoil pad. Welcome to huntingnet.

Here you go, ox... http://www.chuckhawks.com/recoil_table.htm

It's a recoil energy table... and the 270 WSM and the 300 WSM are both in there. The 270 using an 8 lb rifle and shooting 150 gr. bullet at 3000 fps muzzle velocity... and the 300 using an 8.25 lb. rifle and shooting 180 gr. bullet at 2970 fps.

Bottomline, the 300 WSM for this choice of rifles and ammo is ~25% greater recoil energy than the 270 WSM.

What are you planning to hunt with this rifle?... deer?... elk?... moose?

If elk, a .300 caliber is a good choice.

Your decision should be mostly based on the largest game that you plan to hunt with this rifle.

Go for the 270 wsm it will handle anything but the big bears and is the flatest shooting.

Ireally like the .300 win mag round. It has a very flat trajectory so it's good for varied ranges. It's got pretty good punch to it and with modern bullet styles, good expansion.

Recoil is very subjective. The 270 WSM isn't bad IMHO, heck my boy shot it when he was a 13 yo stick figure. The 300 wsm with 200 gr. pills will rock you back. Put a Sims recoil pad on them and they tame down a lot.

Will the 270 WSM take down an elk? YES WITH OUT A DOUBT!!! especially with 150 gr bullets the 270 wsm is quite capable of killing elk. It wouldn't be my first choice though. Moose? YES, they are actually easier to take down than elk.

As others have said you can do basically the same thing with older/ non "magnum" chamberings. The 30-06 is 100 years old and still hard to top. The 270 win is with out a doubt one of the best ever. Heck, a 308 or 7mm-08 will do the job 90% of the time with considerably less recoil.

There are so many excellent chamberings to choose from. I don't think you would go wrong with either the 270 or 300 WSM's but if your still undecided. If you're looking for a deer rifle consider the 25-06. If elk and moose are on the agenda I would suggest a 7mm mag or larger... ie 300 win, 300 WSm, 338...

But i don't want somthing to small like a 270 win i shot one and i hated it and right now im shooting a 338 federal and a 30/06 and im sick of them both considering in only 13 i used a 300 win mag last year elk hunting it was a browning BAR with the thinest recoil pad and no boss and it kncoked me on my ass and that was my expierence with the 300 win mag so i was think 300 WSM or 300 win mag with BOSS and a limb saver recoil pad and then is shouldnt kick that bad

ox - Sounds like you're leaning in this direction...

Here's my elk rifle...http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/4049/p1020705gl0.jpg

It's a Browning A-Bolt II in .300 WSM and with a BOSS. I bought an aftermarket slip-on gel type of recoil pad from Cabela's. When shooting it with the perforated BOSS and with the pad, it's a soft shooter for a .300 Mag.... but it DOES bark... I wear hearing protection when hunting. I also have the CR BOSS as well (no perforations)... but I haven't shot with it yet.

Good luck with your choice!!

RE: 270 WSM vs 7mm WSM vs 300 WSM vs 325 WSM vs 300 Win Mag

If your shooting an Auto and going to a bolt action, your going to have a big difference in felt recoil between the 2 types of guns.. So a 300 WSM in a bolt action will kick a lot harder than a 300 WSM auto. You will be more accurate with a bolt action though.Keep that in mind when you picking out your gun..

RE: 270 WSM vs 7mm WSM vs 300 WSM vs 325 WSM vs 300 Win Mag

My advice would be to Avoid the BOSS! Unless you plan to hunt with ear muffs on, those things will destroy your hearing. Trust me I know. Recoil pads are the way to go for recoil reduction. the muzzle brakes and such are just not worth it.

In my opinion... no.

Why would you want a .300 Win Mag over a .300 WSM if recoil is a concern. Look at Chuck Hawk's table that I sent you a link to. For the same loading, the WSM will produce9% less recoil than the standard Win Mag. Do the math.

Yes, muzzle breaks are loud... but at your size/age, I'd put up with the noise to avoid the recoil... fwiw.

When I say put up with the noise, I mean you should be wearing hearing protection at all times... hunting included!!

haha im 5'7 and i way 130 I've used a 300 win mag for elk hunting but it was semi and as i know there will be a big diffarence in Recoil to a bolt and a semi but i think if i put on a limb saver it wont be so bad like Recoil is intence on that SOB so im trying to find a way to reduce recoil or maybe just get a WSM Caliber but i like the 300WM but i hate that it has so much dam recoil

One thing to consider is the cost of ammo. If you don't re-load, any caliber that has the word 'Magnum' or 'WSM' in it, add about $15.00 per box on to it compared to the standard .270, .308, and .30-06.

I have a .270wsm and a .300wm.I just love the .270 it is great to shoot!! I like my .300wm too but for NA that .270 will handle all comers if the proper bullet is used and you do your part. As far as factory ammo they are close in price to each other but you are getting more for your buck with the .300wm.Dont worry about shooting whitetail with a .300 I do it all the time and it does a great jod.

Ox, if you can go to a range you may want to try one or two just for fun. Also, shoulder a bunch and make sure that it fits you, feels nice in your hands. This could effect your choice.

I have a Sako 75 Finnlite 300WSM w/ a limbsaver and its a joy to shoot. 30 rounds off the bench no problem. I have also shot a kimber montana 325 WSM that kicks like a mule, I will never own that rifle/caliber. My best friend has a 300WM BAR w/ Boss, that he is selling to get a Sako, because he want a bolt, and the felt recoil on the BAR is more than my Sako.

Its been a long time since I have shot a 30-06, so I couldnt compare. I dont mind the recoil, but $30 bucks for the limbsaver, and I'm sure it would be tolerable.
