308 ammo question

Have any of you guys ever used 180 gr. pointed or round nose core lokt ammo on deer. And if you have, how did it work?

have you shot this in your gun yet some rifles dont like heavier bullets due to slower twist barrels,I use 150 grain ammo in my 308 with very good results on deer,My rifle doesn't like 180 grain bullits if yours does then it should preform very well.

Not used it before.. But It should work just fine.. IMO you don't need that much bullet for a deer..

As mentioned, Barrel twist weight has to be considered, but aside from that the problem,Iwould think,with most .30 cal 180 gr bullets being so long, and with with a .308 , is they have to be seated really deep, especialy so, if youhave a clip...
Its only a guess but I would think that powder capacity has to be compromised somewhat affecting velocity and accuracy..
Try the Norma Oryx if a 180gr. is what you want they are shorter,and bonded,and might be able to seat them out farther....

No doubt it will work good, 270. But 180grs is where the 308 starts to sag a little due to limited case capacity. And as has been stated, you don't need 180gr for deer. A well placed 150 gr will drop any deer that ever lived and you'll have the advantage of considerable more speed and a flatter trajectory. 165 gr would be good compromise if you just want a heavier bullet.

For what it's worth, the 190 is a bad mamer jammer at under 100, only used it for a year then dropped back to 165 but I've used 180 also, they all do a good job as long as you know what to expect.

I'm in the process of getting a 308, have never used one before. I'll be using it primarily in the woods and thick stuff. Thanks for the help.

Find whatever it shoots best,30-50grains in bullet weight difference wont make any noticable difference at close range in the woods,and 150 grainers will hammer a deer if you hit them where you aim.Accuracy of your shot is far more important in your situation the ability to shoot around or in between those trees will benefit you more than a little extra weight.Any small obstacle could deflect your shot 180grain or 110grain it doesn't matter much about that small of weight difference.

A friend of mine has shot a few deer using 180 gr. Remington Core Lokt ammo. I don't know if they were pointed or round nose though. He likes them.[/align]

My Savage .308 loves Federal ammo. I tried Remington, I tried Winchester, andtried all other flavors of .308 ammo. Federal was so lethally accurate that it blew my mind! [8D]

150gr Nosler Partition at 100 yards.
3-9x40 scope zoomed to "9".
Savage rifle secured in a buddy's heavy duty bench rest.
BAM, BAM, BAM.
3 rounds, all touching each other in the bullseye, and looked likethe "Ace of Clubs" of a playing card!
Now THAT is a definition of accuracy. Federal ammo (especially in .308) is amazing!

That was it... I was done and packed up and did not need to shoot anymore. My Savage .308 is set and dialed in perfectly!
